9ac7849e35f705830f7b016ff272b0ff1f7ff759 causes this:

  CC arch/s390/mm/ioremap.o
In file included from arch/s390/mm/ioremap.c:18:
include/linux/io.h:46:
warning: "struct pci_dev" declared inside parameter list
include/linux/io.h:46:
warning: its scope is only this definition or declaration,
which is probably not what you want

Guess it's time to get rid of ioremap.c on s390 if possible...

I haven't looked at what causes it, but any leakage of pci details
into io.h is bogus. I'd suggest that the original submitter fixes
up that problem instead.

pci_iomap() depends on two things - PCI and iomap. AFAIK, there is no
config to test whether the current arch supports iomap or not.
Previously it worked because those archs which don't support either one
doesn't have set CONFIG_GENERIC_IOMAP while not implementing
arch-specific ones && not compiling any driver which uses the iomap
interface. This is why pci_iomap() ended up in lib/iomap.c in the first
place; otherwise, it cannot be conditionalized correctly as devers
currently shows (the 'not implementing arch-specific ones' part cannot
be easily tested).

So, it seems what we need is either 1. bogus iomap implementation for
all archs or 2. CONFIG_IOMAP. Hmmm... I think CONFIG_IOMAP is better as
it will allow leaving out related devres parts (or any generic function
using iomap).

My current version:

Subject: [PATCH] sort the devres mess out

Split the implementation-agnostic stuff in separate files.
Make sure that targets using non-default request_irq() pull kernel/irq/devres.o
Mark targets that have no ioport_map() and friends, protect the ioport-related
Parts of lib/devres.o with corresponding ifdef (BTW, we need it in driver
dependencies in quite a few of cases, so that symbol was needed anyway).

Uh, I think that we would rather see a positive-sense symbol instead
of a negative one. Any reason that this one prefers to be negative?

please make this IOPORT. config symbols with an implicit negation
are quite horrible for the brain to understand.

Take a look at lib/Kconfig. And see HAS_IOPORT there.

The reason for doing it that way: majority of targets has that stuff
already. Even more should have it eventually. IOW, the default should
be positive. Modified in arch/*/Kconfig of targets where it doesn't
work. Which is exactly what's done here.

Works fine for me. If this one is applied too s390 works again:

* Split the implementation-agnostic stuff in separate files.
* Make sure that targets using non-default request_irq() pull
  kernel/irq/devres.o
* Introduce new symbols (HAS_IOPORT and HAS_IOMEM) defaulting to positive;
allow architectures to turn them off (we needed these symbols anyway for
dependencies of quite a few drivers).
* protect the ioport-related parts of lib/devres.o with CONFIG_HAS_IOPORT.

It looks like devres stuff is still broken on ia64, at least on the
config below. The build dies with:

  CC drivers/base/dma-mapping.o
/scratch/Ksrc/linux-git/drivers/base/dma-mapping.c: In function 'dmam_noncoherent_release':
/scratch/Ksrc/linux-git/drivers/base/dma-mapping.c:32: error: 'struct ia64_machine_vector' has no member named 'platform_dma_free_coherent'
/scratch/Ksrc/linux-git/drivers/base/dma-mapping.c: In function 'dmam_alloc_noncoherent':
/scratch/Ksrc/linux-git/drivers/base/dma-mapping.c:129: error: 'struct ia64_machine_vector' has no member named 'platform_dma_alloc_coherent'
/scratch/Ksrc/linux-git/drivers/base/dma-mapping.c: In function 'dmam_free_noncoherent':
/scratch/Ksrc/linux-git/drivers/base/dma-mapping.c:159: error: 'struct ia64_machine_vector' has no member named 'platform_dma_free_coherent'
make[2]: *** [drivers/base/dma-mapping.o] Error 1

apparently because dma_free_noncoherent() is expanded to
ia64_mv.platform_dma_free_coherent (instead of
ia64_mv.dma_free_coherent as it should be).

I'm still trying to wade through the layers of include nesting and
macros to figure out where to fix this, but I thought I'd report it in
case someone already has a fix...

 - R.

On ia64, drivers/base/dma-mapping.c doesn't build because it calls
dma_alloc_noncoherent() and dma_free_noncoherent(), which appear to be
terminally broken; the calls end up generating errors like

    drivers/base/dma-mapping.c: In function 'dmam_noncoherent_release':
drivers/base/dma-mapping.c:32: error: 'struct ia64_machine_vector' has no member named 'platform_dma_free_coherent'

because the multiple levels of macro expansion in <asm/dma-mapping.h>
and <asm/machvec.h> end up turning a call to dma_free_noncoherent()
into ia64_mv.platform_dma_free_coherent (instead of the intended
ia64_mv.dma_free_coherent).

This patch fixes this by converting dma_{alloc,free}_noncoherent()
into inline functions that call the corresponding coherent functions,
instead of trying to do this with macros.

Only the "generic" configs were bust, but this patch does the trick
and everything builds and boots again.

Thanks
