This patch series adds support for the Intel SPI serial flash controller
found on many recent Intel CPUs including Baytrail and Braswell. This
driver makes it possible to access the BIOS and other platform data which
is stored on the SPI serial flash. It is also possible to upgrade the BIOS
using this driver if it has not been protected by special hardware bits.

The patch [1/3] includes documentation how to upgrade BIOS on MinnowBoard
MAX.

Since poking the SPI serial flash can brick the machine, this driver can
only be enabled when CONFIG_EXPERT=y and even then it will remain read-only
unless instructed othwerwise by module parameter.

Changes from v5:
  * Use readl_poll_timeout() from iopoll.h instead of open-coding busy
    waiting.
  * First clear bits and then set them in intel_spi_read() and
    intel_spi_write().
  * Use round_down() in lpc_ich_init_spi().
  * Add ACKs

Changes from v4:
  * Use INTEL_SPI_FIFO_SZ instead of hard coded value of 64 bytes
  * Don't increment i inside call to FDATA() macro
  * Check nor->read_opcode in intel_spi_read() and return
    -EINVAL if not supported. We may add SFDP support later on.

  * Added ACKs from Lee Jones.
  * Use bus instead of dev->bus in PCI accesses

  * Rebased on top of v4.8-rc2
  * Updated intel_spi_read/write() according spi-nor core changes which
    drops retlen parameter and returns number of bytes read/written.

  * Older hardware does not support 64k erase command so added erase_64k
    flag which is set only for Broxton (BXT).
  * Fix protection range offset for Broxton. Now there is ispi->pregs
    pointing to the start of the protection registers.
  * Change naming of constants from BCR_BYT -> BYT_BCR and so on.
  * Drop lpc_ich_finalize_spi_cell() and initialize cell directly in
    lpc_ich_init_spi().
  * Use info->type in switch in lpc_ich_init_spi().
  * Add defines for magic numbers used in lpc_ich_init_spi().
  * Use PLATFORM_DEVID_NONE with mfd_add_devices().

Add support for the SPI serial flash host controller found on many Intel
CPUs including Baytrail and Braswell. The SPI serial flash controller is
used to access BIOS and other platform specific information. By default the
driver exposes a single read-only MTD device but with a module parameter
"writeable=1" the MTD device can be made read-write which makes it possible
to upgrade BIOS directly from Linux.

+Upgrading BIOS using intel-spi
+------------------------------
+
+Many Intel CPUs like Baytrail and Braswell include SPI serial flash host
+controller which is used to hold BIOS and other platform specific data.
+Since contents of the SPI serial flash is crucial for machine to function,
+it is typically protected by different hardware protection mechanisms to
+avoid accidental (or on purpose) overwrite of the content.
+
+Not all manufacturers protect the SPI serial flash, mainly because it
+allows upgrading the BIOS image directly from an OS.
+
+The intel-spi driver makes it possible to read and write the SPI serial
+flash, if certain protection bits are not set and locked. If it finds
+any of them set, the whole MTD device is made read-only to prevent
+partial overwrites. By default the driver exposes SPI serial flash
+contents as read-only but it can be changed from kernel command line,
+passing "intel-spi.writeable=1".
+
+Please keep in mind that overwriting the BIOS image on SPI serial flash
+might render the machine unbootable and requires special equipment like
+Dediprog to revive. You have been warned!
+
+Below are the steps how to upgrade MinnowBoard MAX BIOS directly from
+Linux.
+
+ 1) Download and extract the latest Minnowboard MAX BIOS SPI image
+    [1]. At the time writing this the latest image is v92.
+
+ 2) Install mtd-utils package [2]. We need this in order to erase the SPI
+    serial flash. Distros like Debian and Fedora have this prepackaged with
+    name "mtd-utils".
+
+ 3) Add "intel-spi.writeable=1" to the kernel command line and reboot
+    the board (you can also reload the driver passing "writeable=1" as
+    module parameter to modprobe).
+
+ 4) Once the board is up and running again, find the right MTD partition
+    (it is named as "BIOS"):
+
+    # cat /proc/mtd
+    dev:    size   erasesize  name
+    mtd0: 00800000 00001000 "BIOS"
+
+    So here it will be /dev/mtd0 but it may vary.
+
+ 5) Make backup of the existing image first:
+
+    # dd if=/dev/mtd0ro of=bios.bak
+    16384+0 records in
+    16384+0 records out
+    8388608 bytes (8.4 MB) copied, 10.0269 s, 837 kB/s
+
+ 6) Verify the backup
+
+    # sha1sum /dev/mtd0ro bios.bak
+    fdbb011920572ca6c991377c4b418a0502668b73  /dev/mtd0ro

+
+    The SHA1 sums must match. Otherwise do not continue any further!
+
+ 7) Erase the SPI serial flash. After this step, do not reboot the
+    board! Otherwise it will not start anymore.

+    Erasing 4 Kibyte @ 7ff000 -- 100 % complete
+
+ 8) Once completed without errors you can write the new BIOS image:
+
+    # dd if=MNW2MAX1.X64.0092.R01.1605221712.bin of=/dev/mtd0
+
+ 9) Verify that the new content of the SPI serial flash matches the new
+    BIOS image:
+
+    # sha1sum /dev/mtd0ro MNW2MAX1.X64.0092.R01.1605221712.bin

Many Intel CPUs including Haswell, Broadwell and Baytrail have SPI serial
flash host controller as part of the LPC device. This will populate an MFD
cell suitable for the SPI host controller driver if we know that the LPC
device has one.

Intel Apollo Lake SoC exposes serial SPI flash through the LPC device. The
SPI flash host controller is not discoverable through PCI config cycles
because P2SB (function 0 of the device 13) is hidden by the BIOS. We unhide
the device briefly in order to read BAR 0 of the SPI host controller.

There is a dependency between patches 1 and 2 (and 3) so they should be
merged together to avoid build errors. I'm fine if they go via either
tree as long as someone picks them up ;-)

I'm happy either way.  However if you take them, I will require a
pull-request to an immutable branch containing only these patches.

If I take them, it won't be until v4.11, since we are half way though
-rc8 already and I would like them to soak in -next for at least a
couple of weeks.

This series already missed v4.8 and v4.9 so I don't think there is a
rush to get it for v4.10 either ;-) I'm fine if it goes for v4.11.

The merge-window opens in 2 days.

As I mentioned, I like patches to reside in -next for at least 1 maybe
2 RC cycles before merging.  It's far to easy to accept code, then get
bitten if/when it breaks after being merged by Linus.

Hmm, I don't see the driver in linux-next. Is there something preventing
you from merging the branch to your next branch?

I've just sent an email to Stephen Rothwell to ask him whether he could
include the "next" branch of the spi-nor tree into linux-next builds.
