This series provides an asynchronous means of reporting free guest pages
to a hypervisor so that the memory associated with those pages can be
dropped and reused by other processes and/or guests on the host. Using
this it is possible to avoid unnecessary I/O to disk and greatly improve
performance in the case of memory overcommit on the host.

When enabled we will be performing a scan of free memory every 2 seconds
while pages of sufficiently high order are being freed. In each pass at
least one sixteenth of each free list will be reported. By doing this we
avoid racing against other threads that may be causing a high amount of
memory churn.

The lowest page order currently scanned when reporting pages is
pageblock_order so that this feature will not interfere with the use of
Transparent Huge Pages in the case of virtualization.

Currently this is only in use by virtio-balloon however there is the hope
that at some point in the future other hypervisors might be able to make
use of it. In the virtio-balloon/QEMU implementation the hypervisor is
currently using MADV_DONTNEED to indicate to the host kernel that the page
is currently free. It will be zeroed and faulted back into the guest the
next time the page is accessed.

To track if a page is reported or not the Uptodate flag was repurposed and
used as a Reported flag for Buddy pages. We walk though the free list
isolating pages and adding them to the scatterlist until we either
encounter the end of the list or have processed at least one sixteenth of
the pages that were listed in nr_free prior to us starting. If we fill the
scatterlist before we reach the end of the list we rotate the list so that
the first unreported page we encounter is moved to the head of the list as
that is where we will resume after we have freed the reported pages back
into the tail of the list.

Below are the results from various benchmarks. I primarily focused on two
tests. The first is the will-it-scale/page_fault2 test, and the other is
a modified version of will-it-scale/page_fault1 that was enabled to use
THP. I did this as it allows for better visibility into different parts
of the memory subsystem. The guest is running with 32G for RAM on one
node of a E5-2630 v3. The host has had some features such as CPU turbo
disabled in the BIOS.

The results above are for a baseline with a linux-next-20191219 kernel,
that kernel with this patch set applied but page reporting disabled in
virtio-balloon, the patches applied and page reporting fully enabled, the
patches enabled with page shuffling enabled, and the patches applied with
page shuffling enabled and an RFC patch that makes used of MADV_FREE in
QEMU. These results include the deviation seen between the average value
reported here versus the high and/or low value. I observed that during the
test memory usage for the first three tests never dropped whereas with the
patches fully enabled the VM would drop to using only a few GB of the
host's memory when switching from memhog to page fault tests.

Any of the overhead visible with this patch set enabled seems due to page
faults caused by accessing the reported pages and the host zeroing the page
before giving it back to the guest. This overhead is much more visible when
using THP than with standard 4K pages. In addition page shuffling seemed to
increase the amount of faults generated due to an increase in memory churn.
The overehad is reduced when using MADV_FREE as we can avoid the extra
zeroing of the pages when they are reintroduced to the host, as can be seen
when the RFC is applied with shuffling enabled.

The overall guest size is kept fairly small to only a few GB while the test
is running. If the host memory were oversubscribed this patch set should
result in a performance improvement as swapping memory in the host can be
avoided.

From: Alexander Duyck <alexander.h.duyck@linux.intel.com>

Move the head/tail adding logic out of the shuffle code and into the
__free_one_page function since ultimately that is where it is really
needed anyway. By doing this we should be able to reduce the overhead
and can consolidate all of the list addition bits in one spot.

From: Alexander Duyck <alexander.h.duyck@linux.intel.com>

In order to enable the use of the zone from the list manipulator functions
I will need access to the zone pointer. As it turns out most of the
accessors were always just being directly passed &zone->free_area[order]
anyway so it would make sense to just fold that into the function itself
and pass the zone and order as arguments instead of the free area.

In order to be able to reference the zone we need to move the declaration
of the functions down so that we have the zone defined before we define the
list manipulation functions. Since the functions are only used in the file
mm/page_alloc.c we can just move them there to reduce noise in the header.

From: Alexander Duyck <alexander.h.duyck@linux.intel.com>

There are cases where we would benefit from avoiding having to go through
the allocation and free cycle to return an isolated page.

Examples for this might include page poisoning in which we isolate a page
and then put it back in the free list without ever having actually
allocated it.

This will enable us to also avoid notifiers for the future free page
reporting which will need to avoid retriggering page reporting when
returning pages that have been reported on.

From: Alexander Duyck <alexander.h.duyck@linux.intel.com>

In order to pave the way for free page reporting in virtualized
environments we will need a way to get pages out of the free lists and
identify those pages after they have been returned. To accomplish this,
this patch adds the concept of a Reported Buddy, which is essentially
meant to just be the Uptodate flag used in conjunction with the Buddy
page type.

To prevent the reported pages from leaking outside of the buddy lists I
added a check to clear the PageReported bit in the del_page_from_free_list
function. As a result any reported page that is split, merged, or
allocated will have the flag cleared prior to the PageBuddy value being
cleared.

The process for reporting pages is fairly simple. Once we free a page that
meets the minimum order for page reporting we will schedule a worker thread
to start 2s or more in the future. That worker thread will begin working
from the lowest supported page reporting order up to MAX_ORDER - 1 pulling
unreported pages from the free list and storing them in the scatterlist.

When processing each individual free list it is necessary for the worker
thread to release the zone lock when it needs to stop and report the full
scatterlist of pages. To reduce the work of the next iteration the worker
thread will rotate the free list so that the first unreported page in the
free list becomes the first entry in the list.

It will then call a reporting function providing information on how many
entries are in the scatterlist. Once the function completes it will return
the pages to the free area from which they were allocated and start over
pulling more pages from the free areas until there are no longer enough
pages to report on to keep the worker busy, or we have processed as many
pages as were contained in the free area when we started processing the
list.

The worker thread will work in a round-robin fashion making its way
though each zone requesting reporting, and through each reportable free
list within that zone. Once all free areas within the zone have been
processed it will check to see if there have been any requests for
reporting while it was processing. If so it will reschedule the worker
thread to start up again in roughly 2s and exit.

Currently the page poisoning setting wasn't being enabled unless free page
hinting was enabled. However we will need the page poisoning tracking logic
as well for free page reporting. As such pull it out and make it a separate
bit of config in the probe function.

In addition we need to add support for the more recent init_on_free feature
which expects a behavior similar to page poisoning in that we expect the
page to be pre-zeroed.

From: Alexander Duyck <alexander.h.duyck@linux.intel.com>

Add support for the page reporting feature provided by virtio-balloon.
Reporting differs from the regular balloon functionality in that is is
much less durable than a standard memory balloon. Instead of creating a
list of pages that cannot be accessed the pages are only inaccessible
while they are being indicated to the virtio interface. Once the
interface has acknowledged them they are placed back into their respective
free lists and are once again accessible by the guest system.

Unlike a standard balloon we don't inflate and deflate the pages. Instead
we perform the reporting, and once the reporting is completed it is
assumed that the page has been dropped from the guest and will be faulted
back in the next time the page is accessed.

Rather than walking over the same pages again and again to get to the pages
that have yet to be reported we can save ourselves a significant amount of
time by simply rotating the list so that when we have a full list of
reported pages the head of the list is pointing to the next non-reported
page. Doing this should save us some significant time when processing each
free list.

This doesn't gain us much in the standard case as all of the non-reported
pages should be near the top of the list already. However in the case of
page shuffling this results in a noticeable improvement. Below are the
will-it-scale page_fault1 w/ THP numbers for 16 tasks with and without
this patch.

In order to keep ourselves from reporting pages that are just going to be
reused again in the case of heavy churn we can put a limit on how many
total pages we will process per pass. Doing this will allow the worker
thread to go into idle much more quickly so that we avoid competing with
other threads that might be allocating or freeing pages.

The logic added here will limit the worker thread to no more than one
sixteenth of the total free pages in a given area per list. Once that limit
is reached it will update the state so that at the end of the pass we will
reschedule the worker to try again in 2 seconds when the memory churn has
hopefully settled down.

Again this optimization doesn't show much of a benefit in the standard case
as the memory churn is minmal. However with page allocator shuffling
enabled the gain is quite noticeable. Below are the results with a THP
enabled version of the will-it-scale page_fault1 test showing the
improvement in iterations for 16 processes or threads.

tasks processes processes_idle threads threads_idle

Add documentation for free page reporting. Currently the only consumer is
virtio-balloon, however it is possible that other drivers might make use of
this so it is best to add a bit of documetation explaining at a high level
how to use the API.

+.. _free_page_reporting:
+
+=====================
+Free Page Reporting
+=====================
+
+Free page reporting is an API by which a device can register to receive
+lists of pages that are currently unused by the system. This is useful in
+the case of virtualization where a guest is then able to use this data to
+notify the hypervisor that it is no longer using certain pages in memory.
+
+For the driver, typically a balloon driver, to use of this functionality
+it will allocate and initialize a page_reporting_dev_info structure. The
+field within the structure it will populate is the "report" function
+pointer used to process the scatterlist. It must also guarantee that it can
+handle at least PAGE_REPORTING_CAPACITY worth of scatterlist entries per
+call to the function. A call to page_reporting_register will register the
+page reporting interface with the reporting framework assuming no other
+page reporting devices are already registered.
+
+Once registered the page reporting API will begin reporting batches of
+pages to the driver. The API will start reporting pages 2 seconds after
+the interface is registered and will continue to do so 2 seconds after any
+page of a sufficiently high order is freed.
+
+Pages reported will be stored in the scatterlist passed to the reporting
+function with the final entry having the end bit set in entry nent - 1.
+While pages are being processed by the report function they will not be
+accessible to the allocator. Once the report function has been completed
+the pages will be returned to the free area from which they were obtained.
+
+Prior to removing a driver that is making use of free page reporting it
+is necessary to call page_reporting_unregister to have the
+page_reporting_dev_info structure that is currently in use by free page
+reporting removed. Doing this will prevent further reports from being
+issued via the interface. If another driver or the same driver is
+registered it is possible for it to resume where the previous driver had
+left off in terms of reporting free pages.

We need to make certain to advertise support for page poison tracking if
we want to actually get data on if the guest will be poisoning pages. So
if free page hinting is active we should add page poisoning support and
let the guest disable it if it isn't using it.

Page poisoning will result in a page being dirtied on free. As such we
cannot really avoid having to copy the page at least one more time since
we will need to write the poison value to the destination. As such we can
just ignore free page hinting if page poisoning is enabled as it will
actually reduce the work we have to do.

This patch is a subset of the UAPI patch that was submitted for the Linux
kernel. The original patch can be found at:
https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20200211224657.29318.68624.stgit@localhost.localdomain/

Add support for what I am referring to as "free page reporting".
Basically the idea is to function very similar to how the balloon works
in that we basically end up madvising the page as not being used. However
we don't really need to bother with any deflate type logic since the page
will be faulted back into the guest when it is read or written to.

This is meant to be a simplification of the existing balloon interface
to use for providing hints to what memory needs to be freed. I am assuming
this is safe to do as the deflate logic does not actually appear to do very
much other than tracking what subpages have been released and which ones
haven't.

From: Alexander Duyck <alexander.h.duyck@linux.intel.com>

Add support for the MADV_FREE advice argument when discarding pages.
Specifically we add an option to perform a lazy discard for use with free
page reporting as this allows us to avoid expensive page zeroing in the
case that the system is not under memory pressure.

To enable this I simply extended the ram_block_discard_range function to
add an extra parameter for "lazy" freeing. I then renamed the function,
wrapped it in a function defined using the original name and defaulting
lazy to false. From there I created a second wrapper for
ram_block_free_range and updated the page reporting code to use that.

But these differences seem really small - around 1%? I think we're
just showing not much harm was caused?

And this is the "great improvement", yes?

Is it possible to measure the end-user-visible benefits of this?

"should result". Can we firm this up a lot?

Yes. Basically I am just showing the iterations are not negatively
impacted. The big difference between the cases where it is enabled versus
the cases where it is not is that the guest memory footprint is much
smaller in the enabled cases than in the baseline or "Applied" cases.

Yes, this is the great improvement. Basically what we get is effectively
auto-ballooning so the guests aren't having to go to swap when they start
to get loaded up since they are returning the memory to the host when they
are done with it.

> Is it possible to measure the end-user-visible benefits of this?

If I clear the page cache on my host via drop_caches, fire up my 32G VM,
and run the following commands:
  memhog 32g
  echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

On the host I just have to monitor /proc/meminfo and I can see the
difference. I get the following results on the host, in the enabled case
it takes about 30 seconds for it to settle into the final state since I
only report page a bit at a time:
Baseline/Applied
  MemTotal: 131963012 kB
  MemFree: 95189740 kB

Enabled:
  MemTotal: 131963012 kB
  MemFree: 126459472 kB

This is what I was referring to with the comment above. I had a test I was
running back around the first RFC that consisted of bringing up enough VMs
so that there was a bit of memory overcommit and then having the VMs in
turn run memhog. As I recall the difference between the two was something
like a couple minutes to run through all the VMs as the memhog would take
up to 40+ seconds for one that was having to pull from swap while it took
only 5 to 7 seconds for the VMs that were all running the page hinting.

I had referenced it here in the RFC:
https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20190204181118.12095.38300.stgit@localhost.localdomain/

I have been verifying the memory has been getting freed but didn't feel
like the test added much value so I haven't added it to the cover page for
a while since the time could vary widely and is dependent on things like
the disk type used for the host swap since my SSD is likely faster than
spinning rust, but may not be as fast as other SSDs on the market. Since
the disk speed can play such a huge role I wasn't comfortable posting
numbers since the benefits could vary so widely.

I said "should result" here because if the guests are using all of their
memory then the free page reporting won't make a difference since you have
to have free pages before they can be reported. Also we cannot use free
page reporting in the cases such as when a device is direct assigned into
the guest as that currently prevents us from disassociating a page from
the guest.

OK, thanks. I'll add the patches to the mm pile. The new
mm/page_reporting.c is unreviewed afaict, so I guess you own that for
now ;)

It would be very nice to get some feedback from testers asserting "yes,
this really helped my workload" but I understand this sort of testing
is hard to obtain at this stage.

I will see what I can do to get some additional review of those
patches. There has been some review, but I rewrote that block after
suggestions as I had to split it out over several patches to account
for the gains from the changes in patches 7 and 8.

Without the QEMU patches applied there isn't much that this patch set
can do on its own, so that is another piece I have to work on. Yet
another reason to make sure it does no harm if it is not enabled.

So far the one that surprised me the most is that somebody from Huawei
was working to add device pass-thru support to it already.
https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/1578408399-20092-1-git-send-email-weiqi4@huawei.com/

Thanks.

Mel,

Any ETA on when you would be available to review these patches? They are
now in Andrew's tree and in linux-next. I am hoping to get any remaining
review from the community sorted out in the next few weeks so I can move
onto focusing on how best to exert pressure on the page cache so that we
can keep the guest memory footprint small.

Thanks.

I hope to get to it soon. I'm trying to finalise a scheduler-related
series that reconciles NUMA and CPU balancing and it's occupying much of
my attention available for mainline development :(

Ok, the prior code that used post_alloc_hook to make the isolated page seem
like a normally allocated page followed by a free seems strange anyway. As
well as being expensive, isolated pages can end up on the per-cpu lists
which is probably not what is desired. I *think* what you've done is ok so

I assume there is nothing special about 2 seconds other than "do some
progress every so often".

Seems a fair use of atomics.

Might want to note that you are breaking because the only reason to fail
the isolation is that watermarks are not met and we are likely under
memory pressure. It's not a big issue.

However, while I think this is correct, it's hard to follow. This loop can
be broken out of with pages still on the scatter gather list. The current
flow guarantees that err will not be set at this point so the caller
cleans it up so we always drain the list either here or in the caller.

While I think it works, it's a bit fragile. I recommend putting a comment
above this noting why it's safe and put a VM_WARN_ON_ONCE(err) before the
break in case someone tries to change this in a years time and does not
spot that the flow to reach page_reporting_drain *somewhere* is critical.

I complained about the use of zone lock before but in this version, I
think I'm ok with it. The lock is held for the free list manipulations
which is what it's for. The state management with atomics seems
reasonable.

Otherwise I think this is ok and I think the implementation right. Of
great importance to me was the allocator fast paths but they seem to be
adequately protected by a static branch so

The ack applies regardless of whether you decide to document and
defensively protect page_reporting_cycle against losing pages on the
scatter/gather list but I do recommend it.

Thanks for pulling this patch out and noting its impact. I think the
rotation is ok and if it turns out I missed something, it'll be
relatively easy to back out just the optimisation and leave the rest of
the feature intact.

Seems fair. The test case you used would have been pounding on the zone
lock at fairly high frequency so it represents a worst-case scenario but
not necessarily an unrealistic one

Sorry for the delay but I got through most of the patches -- I ignored
the qemu ones. Overall I think it's fine, while I made a suggestion on
how one section can be a bit more defensive, I don't consider it
mandatory to update the series.

Last time I got upset by the use of zone lock, premature optimisation and
some potential page allocator overhead. Now how you use the zone lock is
justified and I think the state managed by atomics is ok. The optimisations
are split out and so if there is a bug lurking in there, they can be
backed out relatively easily and it was easier to review the series in
this way. Finally, the overhead to the page allocator when the feature
is disabled should be non-existent as it's protected by a static branch
so I have no further objections.

Thanks!

Yes, nothing special. I played around with a few different values. I just
settled on 2 seconds as I figured with that and 1/16 of the list per pass
it came out to about 30 seconds which I felt is about the right time for a
fully utilized system to settle back to the inactive state.

I can probably submit a follow-up patch to update the comments. The reason
for not returning an error is because I didn't consider it an error that
we encountered the watermark and were not able to pull any more pages.
Instead I considered that the "stop" point for this pass and have it just
exit out of the loop and flush the data.

At the start of the next pass we will check against the low watermark
instead of the minimum watermark and if that check fails we will simply
stop reporting pages for the zone until additional pages are freed.

I can probably also update the description for page_reporting_cycle since
it may not be clear that the output for this is a partially filled in-
progress scatterlist so we always have to reporting any remaining entries
at the end of processing a given zone. It might make more sense if I move
the bits related to "leftover" in page_reporting_process_zone into their
own function.

I assume this isn't about this section, but the section below?

So one thing I can do is probably add a comment here as well to more
thoroughly explain the reason why we wait to call the break until we are
in the block below.

And I assume you meant to add the VM_WARN_ON_ONCE here? The statement
above wouldn't make much sense since err would always be 0.

I don't consider it an error and I don't think you should return an
error. The comment just needs to explain that the draining happens in
the caller in this case. That should be enough of a warning to a future
developer to double check the flow after any changes to make sure the
drain is reached.

I meant something like

if (!__isolate_free_page(page, order)) {
	VM_WARN_ON_ONCE(err);
	break;
}

Because at this point it's possible there are entries that should go
through page_reporting_drain() but the caller will not call
page_reporting_drain() in the event of an error.

The comment I can do, that shouldn't be an issue. The point I was getting
at is that a separate drain call is expected for this any time the
function is not returning an error, and the only way it can return an
error is if there was a reporting issue.

I would think adding that would confuse things even more. There is a break
statement at the end of the loop that will break out if err is set. So we
should never hit the VM_WARN_ON_ONCE because err should always be 0 before
we even attempt to isolate the page. I think something like the following
would probably make more sense:

err = page_reporting_cycle(prdev, zone, order, mt,
                                   sgl, &offset);
        if (err) {
                /*
                 * We should have drained the scatterlist
                 * prior to exiting page_reporting_cycle if
                 * we encountered an error. If we did not
                 * then this could result in a memory leak.
                 * Verify that the end of the scatterlist
                 * was cleared prior to us getting here.
                 */
                sgl = &sgl[PAGE_REPORTING_CAPACITY - 1];
                VM_WARN_ON_ONCE(sg_page(sgl));
                return err;
        }

With that we are more-or-less making certain that they called
page_reporting_drain which will zero the scatterlist.

I'm not suggesting you return an error. I'm suggesting you put a warn in
before you break due to watermarks *if* there is an error. It should
*never* trigger unless someone modifies the flow and breaks it in which
case the warning will not kill the system but give a strong hint to the
developer that they need to think a bit more.

It's ok to leave it out because at this point, it's a distraction and I
do not see a problem with the current code.
