Rename
	struct notifier_block *this
to
	struct notifier_block *nb

"nb" is arguably a better name for notifier block.

Someone used "this" back in the days and everyone else copied.
In nearly 100% of cases it is unused with notable exception of
net/x25/af_ax25.c

Both gcc and g++ accept new name. It would make my adventure of carrying
linux++ patchset slightly less miserable.

But not enough better to cause tons of pointless churn. Feel free
to use better naming in new code you write or do significant changes
to, but stop these pointless renames.

Well, judging from the mention of "linux++" in the subject, I figure
this is the old discussion of someone trying to make Linux code, or
parts thereof, work in a C++ environment. Since the patch does not just
touch headers but .c files, I deduce that there seems to be a project
trying to build Linux, or a subset thereof, as a C++ program for the fun
of it. UML could come to mind.

Is it a hot potato? Definitely. But so was IPv6 NAT, and now we have it
anyway.

Maybe it's a better name. But it doesn't seem worth it.

Because C++ reserved words are entirely irrelevant.

We did this same dance almost three decades ago, and the fact is, C++
has other reserved words that make it all pointless.

There is no way I will accept the renaming of various "new" variables.
We did it, it was bad, we undid it, and we now have a _lot_ more uses
of 'new' and 'old', and no, we're not changing it for a braindead
language that isn't relevant to the kernel.

The fact is, C++ chose bad identifiers to make reserved words.

If you want to build the kernel with C++, you'd be a lot better off just doing

   /* C++ braindamage */
   #define this __this
   #define new __new

and deal with that instead.

Because no, the 'new' renaming will never happen, and while 'this'
isn't nearly as common or relevant a name, once you have the same
issue with 'new', what's the point of trying to deal with 'this'?

The real problems are "class" and "new" indeed.

I'm not sending "new".

Can't do this because of placement new.

I'm not sending "new".

There is stuff which can be merge without breaking source compatibility
and readability of C version:

	private		=> priv
	virtual		=> virt
	this => self (in some contexts)

and those which can not. I'm not sending the latter.

Can you explain?

My point about 'new' is that

 (a) there's a lot more 'new' than 'this'

 (b) without dealing with 'new', dealing with 'this' is pointless

So why bother? Without some kind of pre-processing phase to make our C
code palatable to a C++ parser, it will never work.

And if you _do_ have a pre-processing phase (which might be a #define,
but might also be a completely separate pass with some special tool),
converting 'this' in the kernel sources isn't useful anyway, because
you could just do it in the pre-processing phase instead.

See? THAT is why I'm harping on 'new'. Not because you sent me a patch
to deal with 'new', but because such a patch will never be accepted,
and without that patch the pain from 'this' seems entirely irrelevant.

What's your plan for 'new'? And why doesn't that plan then work for 'this'?

              Linus
