With 5.4 I saw repeated packet loss / very long delays. Also with 5.4.1. There were also some kernel messages at about the same time as the pings stopped: "r8169 transmit queue timed out". I was unable to reproduce the issue on another system with a different network card. I've run a fairly targeted bisect - see below. If there is any more information I can provide, or testing to be done I'll be glad to help.
