I am running RedHat 9. Trackball is detected and works when using the 
stock 2.4.20-9 kernel that RedHat provided.

With 2.4.21-rc1, I have included the USB and input devices in the 
kernel, as modules, and as various combinations in between. My USB 
Logitech Trackball shows up as being detected and setup, but it doesn't 
work. Attached is my config and a trimmed down dmesg. (ppa is messed up 
and floods me with messages)
I have USB vebose debugging turned on. That may help. Please let me know 
what information you might need in addition.

Is this trackball plugged into a USB 2.0 hub or controller?

If you cat /dev/input/mice and move the trackball around, do you get
data?

Under the RedHat kernel, I get data.
Under the 2.4.21-rc1 kernel, I get nothing.

Again, is this device plugged into a hub?  Or directly into the
controller's root hub?  It looks like the device keeps getting
disconnected and reconnected, based on the kernel log you posted.

I'm using a Logitech Cordless TrackMan here, and this works fine with 
2.4.21-rc1. I don't know which trackball you have, but the Logitech input 
devices all seem to be using more or less the same receiver, and this is what 
the problem would be about.

Anyway, if not done already, I would suggest that you plug the trackball right 
into one of the computer's USB ports and not into an external hub to see if 
that makes a difference.

I have a Logitech Cordless Optical Trackman. It detects as a Logitech 
Cordless Receiver. My motherboard is an Asus P4S8X. It has the 
SiS648/SiS963 chipsets. I'm not using an external hub. I'm using the 
ports on my motherboard. I've tried using all 6 USB ports I have, but I 
get the same thing; detection and no input.

If you do not build in the CONFIG_USB_EHCI driver, does it work ok?

Strange. My trackball actually seems to be the very same as yours (Logitech 
Cordless Trackman Optical). I'm also using a Logitech cordless keyboard, but 
that's a different issue.

By what my output is showing, I don't think the USB device is being 
registered with input correctly.
Your dmesg line:
input2: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [Logitech USB Receiver] on usb1:2.1
My dmesg line:
: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [Logitech USB Receiver] on usb2:4.0

I don't have the first field on mine.
Any ideas?

 Having experienced this little nasty myself, I would guess you don't
have CONFIG_USB_HIDINPUT set.

Nils, you have

	CONFIG_USB_HIDINPUT=y

which is correct.  David, you have

	CONFIG_USB_HIDINPUT=m

which is an illegal setting.  You must have hand-edited your config file
to get this.  My guess is, the '=m' is being treated as 'not set'.

You also need to have CONFIG_INPUT (Input core support section) set.
If this is not set you will not see the CONFIG_USB_HIDINPUT question
come up in the USB section.

Actually I didn't.. Blame RedHat. I used their config for the template 
for my kernel so I'd have fairly good compatibility. I'm compiling a 
kernel now to see if that was the bug.

This was it! I now have a working trackball! Thanks all of you who 
helped me out. I'll post a bug report to RedHat now. :-)
