Hi Alan,

Not really a big issue, but still worth mentioning:

... which I didn't notice until I tried to merge an unrelated
patch for our kernel RPM yesterday.

This certainly explains the bad reports some people have sent
in about 2.4.9-ac15 ;)

Because of the now correct merge, I'm _very_ interested in
any test results with this VM.

What's the idea behind this? Are we now going to restrict certain parts of
the kernel to interacting with GPL-only modules?

It's working for me. I have loaded up three X sessions, and bunches
of software running. My 500 MHz PIII with 192 MB of RAM and 255 MB of
swap in current use is certainly willing to take some time if I try to
get from one X session to another. And some Netscape windows seem
stubborn about refreshing, but I think it's looking good.

Having been a complainer, I hereby say it seems fixed.

Imagine you have a shared library of code that makes writing some kind of
driver easier, and you don't see why it should be available to non GPL
driver modules.

Linus has made it absolutely (as in he'll send out the killer penguin with
chainsaw if need be) clear that existing symbols wont mysteriously turn GPL
only.

I can see that. Now would there be any restrictions on this? Ie could a
whole subsystem only export symbols for GPL-only use?

Hi, Alan and everyone.

I have continued testing Alan's ac-branch kernel but failed because of
following 2 problems.

1. include/asm-ppc/keyboard.h

It's a small problem ,easy to resolve.
If this patch is correct, please apply it.

2. arch/ppc/kernel/setup.c

This error has occured since -ac12.
I tried to make patch but did't work well.

By comparing same files in each architectures, I think, in func
'get_cpuinfo' `n' is used in mistake for "i"....

Does anyone resolve this error, or advise me?

2.4.9-ac16 fails to link with CONFIG_APM=y and
CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ=n. This is because apm.c unconditionally
makes calls to functions (__sysrq_lock_table and friends)
defined in sysrq.c.

I can think of a couple of different approaches to work this
around, but is there an established proper way to resolve this
kind of dependency in the kernel code?

I've attached a fix based on (3) below at the end of this message.

 (1) In include/linux/sysrq.h, define stubs for
__sysrq_lock_table that does not do anything when
     CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ is not set;

 (2) Change ''make config'' procedure so that CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ
     is always set if CONFIG_APM is defined;

 (3) Change drivers/char/Makefile to make sysrq.o to be linked
in if CONFIG_APM is defined (even if CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ is).

The approaches I listed as (1) and (3) in my previous message
are non solutions, since it will result in a kernel where apm.o
makes calls into sysrq functions, whose proper operations would
depend on sysrq.o to have been properly initialized by other
parts of the kernel, which still think CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ is not
defined.

The below should be a better fix.

Uh-oh. I'll try and find time to do it later today, or remind Paul when
he pops up.

Hi!

Alan Cox wrote:

"swapoff -a" gives:

Sep 28 17:25:25 unknown kernel: Trying to vfree() nonexistent vm area
(e105a000)

That was after I've run "eatmem" to fill all physical and swap memory.
The maschine was totally frozen while "eatmem" was running and control+C
took 2
minutes to take effect.
The box returned with a load > 9.

Greetings,
Stefan

Yes, that looks like a decent temporary workaround for apm.c.

What should be done (IMO of course) is that
linux/include/linux/sysrq.h should provide empty/null definitions
of [un]register_sysrq_key()... and it did do that until
2.4.9-ac15, but those #defines are( were) untyped, and they
should be typed (i.e., return 0), just as the versions
of them that are present when CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ is #defined.

This all became an issue when a patch was requested, and created
where people DIDN't want to #ifdef in their modules. I think that
My approach there was hosed, and that we need to go back to the
stubs in sysrq.h method, but for all exposed symbols. If every
module which wants to use sysrq has to #ifdef things, code gets ugly.

It seems Al Viro forgot to remove a free() when cleaning
up some code. Hugh Dickens has already posted a patch to
fix this.

Hmmm. Just searched for it and can't find. Did find references to that
syslog entry being a potentially bad bug though. I presume it is
benign in this situation?

Alan,

Somewhere between -ac14 and -ac16, the following appeared:

--- linux/include/asm-s390/pgtable.h~	Fri Sep 28 20:54:54 2001
+++ linux/include/asm-s390/pgtable.h	Fri Sep 28 21:45:18 2001

-/*
- * No page table caches to initialise
- */
-#define pgtable_cache_init()	do { } while (0)
-
 #endif /* _S390_PAGE_H */

So, I decided to check for pgtable_cache_init in arch/s390 and
include/asm-s390 but couldn't find it - I guess this is a mismerge
or something the S390 people missed.

pgtable_cache_init() must be implemented in all architectures. Any
that don't implement it must make the call a no-op as per the original
pgtable.h.
