  To: linux-kernel

CPU: Athlon-XP 2700+
MB: ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
Memory: 3 x 512MB
Notes: UP kernel, standard EIDE driver, boot paramters acpi=off
nolapic,noapic
Libc: glibc-2.3.2 with linuxthreads.

This error occurs while trying to write a DVD+RW to an NEC-1300A DVD
writer
using cdrecord-dvdpro executable (no source available). This works fine
on linux-2.4.23.

First off, acpi should be working just fine now...should have been for
the last couple versions of 2.6.0-test.
Second, you probably shouldn't be using ide-scsi. ATAPI works just fine
using straight ide for CDR's so it probably works fine for DVD-R+R+RW
whatever stupid acronymn they're using today.
Third, you didn't post the actual oops so how is anyone supposed t osay
anything about this problem?
Fourth, you are using a binary you didn't compile that's probably
compiled against headers for api's found in 2.4.x which is seriously
different from the kernel you're running it on. Compile your own
cdrecord and see how it goes.

ACPI works fine but LAPIC doesn't. If I turn ACPI I have to add
pci=noacpi.  It
is safer to turn the whole beast off.

The Oops was at the end of the syslog output. Maybe I should have put it
at the start.

I can't get the source, otherwise I would have compiled it against 2.6.0.
However
I don't find this point particularly relevant since 2.6.0 should be
backward compatible
with 2.4,0, atleast at the binary level.

I tried the earlier versions of dvdrtools and cdrtools and their didn't
like ide-cd.  This
version (cdrecord-dvdpro) does but it still don't alter the fact that
while using ide-scsi
is no longer recommended, it still should work.

Here the the oops again.

Does it work if you build ACPI into the kernel, but exclude local APIC?

CONFIG_ACPI=y
CONFIG_X86_UP_APIC=n
CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC=n

Or perhaps the "nolapic" boot-time option is effective?

Well, we're trying, but nobody has had a lot of luck with it.

However, your particular case looks pretty straightforward:

Somebody jumped through a NULL pointer, and it was:

> Dec  2 12:02:46 mig27 kernel: Process cdrecord-prodvd (pid: 369,  threadinfo=e4160000 task=f65d4100)
> Dec  2 12:02:46 mig27 kernel: Call Trace:
> Dec  2 12:02:46 mig27 kernel:  [<f9859b1b>]  idescsi_transfer_pc+0x11b/0x120 [ide_scsi]

That's the code that does:

	...
        if (test_bit (PC_DMA_OK, &pc->flags)) {
                set_bit (PC_DMA_IN_PROGRESS, &pc->flags);
                (void) (HWIF(drive)->ide_dma_begin(drive));
        }
	...

and it looks like the PC_DMA_OK flag is incorrect.

Doing a bit more digging shows that "idescsi_issue_pc()" seems to use some
variables without ever actually _initializing_ them. How about this
trivial one-liner? Does that make it work for you?

Jens? Comments?

Is that "should have been working" as in "I believe it to be working" or
"dammit they said it was working?"

| using straight ide for CDR's so it probably works fine for DVD-R+R+RW

ATAPI works fine for programs which know about it and are
Linux-specific. Programs expecting SCSI devices, which work on Linux
2.4, Solaris, SCO, and even Windows (I'm told) want SCSI.

| Third, you didn't post the actual oops so how is anyone supposed t osay

Your mail was truncated, I believe.

You missed the "binary only" in his post. That software is no more
available in source than Windows.

I think the real point is not that it doesn't work, but that it oops's
the system. I would regard anything which a user can do which causes an
oops as a critical problem.

Just as an fyi, Im on a 2600, same mobo (well, v2 1007 bios).. 2.6 test
11, acpi on, local apic on, apic on.

Can burn CDs and DVD+RWs without IDE-SCSI just fine.

I bet you're using a recent cdrecord and growisofs, both of which have
had Linux-specific code added to use the non-SCSI interface. Programs
which are written for SCSI won't run on that interface.

I'm told that SCSI programs for Win9x will run under vmware using
ide-scsi under 2.4 but not 2.6, can someone confirm? I don't have the
software for that test, but I'm told Win9x is quite popular ;-)

The last time I tried cdparanoia it didn't work with 2.6 (ATAPI or
ide-scsi), and I haven't tried cdda2wav. Some work, some don't.

Please let us know if you're using other software than my guess, hard to
track what's been converted from SCSI to ATAPI.

Sorry.. missed those out:
k3b 0.10.2
cdrdao 1.1.8pre2
cdrtools 2.01 alpha 19 (cdrecord is in here.. it is 2.01a19-dvd)
and growisofs is 5.1.3
mkisofs is 2.01a17.

All are latest "usntable" builds on Gentoo, or cvs. So, yes.. very
recent. I was very happy when i could burn a CD/DVD without IDE-SCSI,
and that was part of the reason I tried out 2.6 now.

cdparanoia: 9.8 (march 23 2001)
cdda2wav 2.01a19

Let me know if you want anymore versions.

At this point I'll sat thanks for all the version numbers, and ask if
you have noted if the DVD burn is using DMA or not. If your system CPU
is very low it clearly is. I haven't checked to see if an audio burn
uses DMA, data CD burn clearly does. That one I can check this weekend,
my 2.6 boxen here have no burners.

Your fix is correct Linus, the very same bug was fixed in 2.4 recently
as well.

Linus,

Cool bananas. I have applied the patch and it has fixed the oops. Many
thanks for the quick reply and patch.

Cheers,

Ross

Well, we're trying, but nobody has had a lot of luck with it.

However, your particular case looks pretty straightforward:

> Here the the oops again.
>
> Dec 2 12:02:46 mig27 kernel: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer
dereference at virtual address 00000000
> Dec  2 12:02:46 mig27 kernel:  printing eip:
> Dec  2 12:02:46 mig27 kernel: 00000000

Somebody jumped through a NULL pointer, and it was:

> Dec  2 12:02:46 mig27 kernel: Process cdrecord-prodvd (pid: 369,
threadinfo=e4160000 task=f65d4100)
> Dec  2 12:02:46 mig27 kernel: Call Trace:
> Dec  2 12:02:46 mig27 kernel:  [<f9859b1b>]
idescsi_transfer_pc+0x11b/0x120 [ide_scsi]

That's the code that does:

                 ...
        if (test_bit (PC_DMA_OK, &pc->flags)) {
                set_bit (PC_DMA_IN_PROGRESS, &pc->flags);
                (void) (HWIF(drive)->ide_dma_begin(drive));
        }
                 ...

and it looks like the PC_DMA_OK flag is incorrect.

Doing a bit more digging shows that "idescsi_issue_pc()" seems to use some
variables without ever actually _initializing_ them. How about this
trivial one-liner? Does that make it work for you?

Jens? Comments?

                                                 Linus

Oh leave in the Priory, please. Given the overloaded meanings of both
Priory and Beaver in the USA, and the recent scandals with clerical
molestation, it's far funnier that way.
