I have a pci backplane extender, with 4 cards 
(named piraq) in it. The cards are detected by 
the PCI system, and irqs 92-95 are assigned, 
as shown in /var/log/messages:

My driver loads happily, with succesful registering 
of these interrupts. However, the interrupts don't 
get handled properly, and /proc/interrupts shows that 
they have not been correctly setup:

If I boot with "noapic", the interrupts do get 
assigned to XT-PIC, and will trigger correctly.

Same results are seen in 2.4.22 and 2.6.0-test9.

N.B. System is Dell 650 w/ dual Xeons.
Backplane extender is a Magma. This scheme uses
a PCI interconnect card in both the Dell and 
the Magma, with a connecting cable.

Can you enable APIC_DEBUG debugging in "include/asm-i386/apic.h", and make 
sure that you build the kernel with a big printk buffer. Then, in case 
your distribution comes with a broken "dmesg" binary that doesn't show 
more than about 20kB of data, compile this trivial program and run it 
after bootup, and send the whole log out..

It would be a pity to have to boot with "noapic", since this is exactly 
the kind of situation where you _want_ the extra interrupts.

The MP tables mention IRQ's up to 51, but no further.

But the PIRQ routing tables talk about irqs 92-95 for bus 6.

It really looks like the IRQ routing entries are just broken. One 
potential fix is to enable ACPI, and hope that the ACPI irq routing isn't 
as broken as the PIRQ stuff.

Other than that I don't see anything we can do. Anybody else?

I do notice that bus #6, which is the backplane extender,
has an APIC id of 0, but an APIC #0 was not enumerated. All other
buses get assigned to the identified APICs of 8, 9 and 10.

I enabled ACPI, and the interrupts are now assigned correctly,
and in the range of 48-51:

           CPU0       CPU1       
 
 48:        878        389   IO-APIC-level  piraq
 49:        923        336   IO-APIC-level  piraq
 50:      17239        838   IO-APIC-level  ioc2, piraq
 51:        879        404   IO-APIC-level  piraq

They are now getting handled properly, i.e. I am receiveing 
interrupts from the boards located in the backplane extender. 
This is with 2.4.22.

I didn't realize that ACPI is related to interrupt management 
as well as power control. Is there any downside to using ACPI?

Yes. However, I have this suspicion that that is just more confusion by 
the BIOS tables. 

The reason APIC #0 wasn't enumerated is that it doesn't seem to exist in 
the MP tables. So not only does the PIRQ table not contain any information 
about that bus, but the MP tables are very silent about it too.

I dunno.. Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it really looks like your BIOS 
tables are just pretty broken. 

It would really be interesting to hear whether using ACPI enumeration 
fixes it or at least whether the symptoms are different. Especially with 
newer hardware, the BIOS people have only ever tested their tables with 
Windows, and ACPI will have overridden any MPtable information, so..

Good.

The downside to ACPI is that it's a complex standard, and with complexity 
comes the inevitable bugs. As you just found out, it does a lot more than 
just power control (the "C" is for "Configuration").

On some machines the ACPI support is even more broken than other BIOS 
tables, but it's getting better.

Yep it does ;-( IA64 relies exclusively on ACPI for irq routing and on
x86 you are seeing more and more hardware that requires it as well,
notably Sony laptops such as the R505 series will not see interrupts
assigned to their cardbus bridge without ACPI interrupt routing.

As for downsides, take a look at the ACPI spec and judge for
yourself. I'll refrain from commenting ;-)
