TL;DR: While a tool like liblockdep is useful, it probably doesn't
belong within the kernel tree.

liblockdep attempts to reuse kernel code both directly (by directly
building the kernel's lockdep code) as well as indirectly (by using
sanitized headers). This makes liblockdep an integral part of the
kernel.

It also makes liblockdep quite unique: while other userspace code might
use sanitized headers, it generally doesn't attempt to use kernel code
directly which means that changes on the kernel side of things don't
affect (and break) it directly.

All our workflows and tooling around liblockdep don't support this
uniqueness. Changes that go into the kernel code aren't validated to not
break in-tree userspace code.

liblockdep ended up being very fragile, breaking over and over, to the
point that living in the same tree as the lockdep code lost most of it's
value.

liblockdep should continue living in an external tree, syncing with
the kernel often, in a controllable way.

I have eagerly applied this patch, because I wasn't too happy with
that thing in the first place.

However - I do note that there's signs of liblockdep in the
tools/include/ directory still.

Some of those headers may now be dead, and should be removed, but I
didn't end up trying to figure it out, so I left them alone.

This stupid shell command

git grep -il liblockdep tools/include/ |
        sed 's:tools/include/::' |
while read i; do echo; echo $i:; echo; git grep $i tools/ ; done

seems to say that yes, the <linux/module.h> header in the tools
directory is still used, but the rest of them seem to only reference
other dead headers.

Hmm? It would be lovely to clean those headers up too and get rid of
them - because those headers are very much part of why I hated the
whole liblockdep mess, and why I was so happy to immediately apply
this patch..

Thank you for providing the room for this experiment nonetheless.

Yup, there are remenants in the common header directory which need more
careful auditing before removing. I'll send a follow-up patch during one
of the early -rc cycles.

Thanks!

I read that liblockdep and the lockdep tool are moving out of the Linux
kernel tree, but couldn't find where they will be moving to. An LWN
commenter suggested I contact you to ask about this. Thoughts?

I got this response from Sasha elsewhere and permission to fwd here:

I haven't really gotten to extracting it out of the kernel tree.
There's a bunch of annoying work needed there to extract whatever
headers and code we need out of the kernel tree and make it work,
and I just haven't had the time to do it yet. I'm hopeful I could
do it in the next few weeks - have been a bit busy.
