Hi,

The following series changes the phylink interface to allow us to
better support split MAC / MAC PCS setups.  The fundamental change
required for this turns out to be quite simple.

Today, mac_config() is used for everything to do with setting the
parameters for the MAC, and mac_link_up() is used to inform the
MAC driver that the link is now up (and so to allow packet flow.)
mac_config() also has had a few implementation issues, with folk
who believe that members such as "speed" and "duplex" are always
valid, where "link" gets used inappropriately, etc.

With the proposed patches, all this changes subtly - but in a
backwards compatible way at this stage.

We pass the the full resolved link state (speed, duplex, pause) to
mac_link_up(), and it is now guaranteed that these parameters to
this function will always be valid (no more SPEED_UNKNOWN or
DUPLEX_UNKNOWN here - unless phylink is fed with such things.)

Drivers should convert over to using the state in mac_link_up()
rather than configuring the speed, duplex and pause in the
mac_config() method. The patch series includes a number of MAC
drivers which I've thought have been easy targets - I've left the
remainder as I think they need maintainer input. However, *all*
drivers will need conversion for future phylink development.

[PATCH net-next 1/8] net: phylink: propagate resolved link config via mac_link_up()

Propagate the resolved link parameters via the mac_link_up() call for
MACs that do not automatically track their PCS state. We propagate the
link parameters via function arguments so that inappropriate members
of struct phylink_link_state can't be accessed, and creating a new
structure just for this adds needless complexity to the API.

In what sense it's lossy? I cannot see how information can be lost by translating the rx/tx pause state to pause/asym.

It looks like you missed the felix_phylink_mac_link_up() conversion in
this patch? (which also makes it fail to build, by the way, I'm
supposed the Kbuild robot didn't already jump)
Nonetheless, I've manually added the missing speed, duplex, tx_pause
and rx_pause parameters, and it appears to work as before.
Same for sja1105.

Quite possibly; the patch was developed against 5.5 plus the phylink
changes, but applied to net-next. Hmm, it seems my coccinelle script
that detects .mac_link_up initialiser prototypes, but not the DSA
equivalent using the old prototype.

If you're just translating rx/tx to pause/asym and then doing the
reverse, then it isn't lossy, but if the firmware is resolving
pause/asym according to the table in IEEE 802.3, then it will be
lossy.

If the firmware doesn't interpret the bits, then why not do the
sensible thing and just pass the enablement status rather than
trying to confusingly encode it back to pause/asym?

I've just sent v2 with ocelot and qca included... and some recipients
for patch 2 bounced - the Cc line is now too long!

As far as the kbuild robot goes, you are not the first to notice that
kbuild seems to be flakey... I've noticed it for some time, as has
Greg KH.  It isn't just patches on mailing lists, it's git trees as
well.

The firmware is just doing the reverse translation.

I agree. It's unnecessary and confusing. I'll add this on the list of fixups to be made by the firmware team.
