Andrew Lunn agreed to the semantic change performed in the patch, but not to the implementation. He asked for a simpler implementation. I attempted doing that, but it ultimately failed, because the knowledge of which port is the cpu port is not available at the time of parsing the device tree. I've documented my attempts and alternatives at https://lore.kernel.org/netdev/20200716100743.GA3275@laureti-dev/ and reached the conclusion that my initial implementation is the simplest option.
