Public bug reported:

Hey,
I am part of the Zynthian team and we use qemu-arm-static to cross compile lv2 audio plugins.

When running a compilation of DISTRHO-Ports we get:

lv2_ttl_generator: pthread_mutex_lock.c:81: __pthread_mutex_lock: Assertion `mutex->__data.__owner == 0' failed.
qemu: uncaught target signal 6 (Aborted) - core dumped
./scripts/generate-ttl.sh: line 27: 16524 Aborted $GEN ./$FILE
Makefile:62: recipe for target 'gen_lv2' failed
make[1]: *** [gen_lv2] Error 134
make[1]: Leaving directory '/home/pi/zynthian-sw/plugins/DISTRHO-Ports'
Makefile:104: recipe for target 'lv2' failed
make: *** [lv2] Error 2

lv2_ttl_generator source is here:
https://github.com/DISTRHO/DISTRHO-Ports/tree/master/libs/lv2-ttl-generator

The command that is ruining is
lv2_ttl_generator ./TAL-Filter-2.so

And ./TAL-Filter-2.so source is here:
https://github.com/DISTRHO/DISTRHO-Ports/tree/master/ports/tal-filter-2/source

Is there a way to debug what is going on?
This runs fine on a Raspberrypi which is armv7

A workaround would also help.

Hey,
Not sure how to boil it down (yet). But this would reproduce it for you:

cd /tmp
wget https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbian_lite/images/raspbian_lite-2018-04-19/2018-04-18-raspbian-stretch-lite.zip
unzip 2018-04-18-raspbian-stretch-lite.zip
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/guysoft/CustomPiOS/devel/src/common.sh
source ./common
mkdir ./mount

mount_image ./2018-04-18-raspbian-stretch-lite.img 2 ./mount
cd mount
sudo bash -c "$(declare -f fixLd); fixLd"
sudo cp $(which qemu-arm-static) ./usr/bin/
sudo chroot .
apt-get update

apt-get install -y git premake libfreetype6-dev libgl1-mesa-dev libx11-dev libasound2-dev
git clone https://github.com/DISTRHO/DISTRHO-Ports.git --depth=1

cd DISTRHO-Ports/

export RASPPI=true
export LINUX_EMBED=true

./scripts/premake-update.sh linux

make lv2 -j4

once you have it all running you can just run again

./libs/lv2_ttl_generator ./bin/lv2/TAL-Filter-2.lv2/TAL-Filter-2.so

@pmaydell Is there anything I can do to help speed this up? I can run
tests or make reproduction easier if that helps. But I need direction
what actually helps you.

Thanks for the repro case; it's on my list of things to look at, but the
gating factor there is that my todo list is several miles long. If you
want to look at it yourself, the first step is probably to run the
program under qemu with qemu's -g option to enable the gdbstub, connect
an arm-aware gdb to it and see if you can get a backtrace out of it.

Hey,
So how do I enable -g option?
The command that activates qemu is:

sudo chroot .

How do I set -g?

Also minor update - the new rasbian image (aka updated g++ libs) makes
lv2_ttl_generator hang on:

Writing drowaudio-flanger.ttl... done!
Generate ttl data for './drowaudio-tremolo.so', basename: 'drowaudio-tremolo'

So definitely something is strange with how lv2_ttl_generator runs the
.so files provided to it.

You want to execute a single program in the chroot (whatever the binary
that is failing is):

sudo chroot . usr/bin/qemu-arm-static -g program/to/run arguments

Ok, got it to run with (had to septate arguments with --):

sudo chroot . usr/bin/qemu-arm-static -g -- DISTRHO-
Ports/libs/lv2_ttl_generator DISTRHO-Ports/bin/lv2/TAL-Filter-2.lv2/TAL-
Filter-2.so

When running I can see two processes:

root 31993 0.0 0.0 86556 4696 pts/9 S+ 15:06 0:00 sudo chroot . usr/bin/qemu-arm-static -g -- DISTRHO-Ports/libs/lv2_ttl_generator DISTRHO-Ports/bin/lv2/TAL-Filter-2.lv2/TAL-Filter-2.so

I can attach to the pid using something like this:

sudo gdb -p $(ps aux | grep usr/bin/qemu-arm-static | grep -v grep |
grep -v chroot | awk '{ print $2 }')

When I continue I get:

(gdb) c
Continuing.

Thread 1 "qemu-arm-static" received signal SIGABRT, Aborted.

The other process I can get with removing "-v" chroot so:

...

sudo gdb -p $(ps aux | grep usr/bin/qemu-arm-static | grep -v grep |
grep chroot | awk '{ print $2 }')

You want to attach with an Arm-aware gdb to the QEMU debug stub, not
connect an x86 gdb to the x86 QEMU process. On Debian/Ubuntu the gdb in
the 'gdb-multiarch' package will do.

Also, I gave you a wrong command line by mistake: you need "-g 1234",
not "-g -" (-g wants the TCP port as an option).

So you run the chroot/qemu command; QEMU should then sit waiting for a
connection on port 1234 from gdb. In another terminal run

$ gdb-multiarch
[...]
(gdb) set arch arm
The target architecture is assumed to be arm
(gdb) target remote :1234
Remote debugging using :1234
0x00008880 in ?? ()

You can then tell gdb 'c' to continue. You should also be able to tell
gdb the arm binary filename so it can pick up symbols, but I forget how.

It wants debug symbols for the guest binary, not for QEMU. As it
suggests, the "file" command pointed at the guest binary ought to help.

This commandline isn't right, incidentally:
  gdb-multiarch target remote :1234

"target remote :1234" is a command for the gdb prompt, not a set of
command line arguments (gdb tells you it's harmlessly ignored these
arguments).

http://tinkering-is-fun.blogspot.com/2009/12/debugging-non-native-
programs-with-qemu.html looks like a plausible tutorial for what you
need to do with "file" (and has some other commands that might help for
dynamically linked libraries). What you want to do when you get to the
SIGABRT is tell gdb "bt" to get a backtrace, which if you have the
symbol info will give a backtrace of where the guest was.

These files seem to have no debug symbols. Compiling them
with debug might help (or might not).

The QEMU project is currently considering to move its bug tracking to
another system. For this we need to know which bugs are still valid
and which could be closed already. Thus we are setting older bugs to
"Incomplete" now.

If you still think this bug report here is valid, then please switch
the state back to "New" within the next 60 days, otherwise this report
will be marked as "Expired". Or please mark it as "Fix Released" if
the problem has been solved with a newer version of QEMU already.

Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience.

I am not currently actively building this. However since this has not
been fixed we moved to pre-compiling this in order to avoid using QEMU.
It means building needed dedcated hardware.

See resolution at:

Hello,

I believe I experienced the same bug in a similar context: using QEMU
Linux user emulation for continuous integration on GitHub Actions. As a
workaround, I did run the chroot script with taskset -c 0 to limit
execution on a single CPU which has been solving the problem for more
than 10 successive runs. @guysoft does taskset fixes your problem?

This was with qemu 4.2 as packaged by Ubuntu. The environment (automated
CI) makes it difficult to plug gdb.

In my case, the crash happens with PostgreSQL.
https://www.postgresql.org/message-id/86C24765-95F7-464F-9677-B09A396A5F69%40kallisys.net

It may be related to the way QEMU acquires a global lock to ensure
memory barrier semantic on ARM or to the way QEMU interprets RaspberryPi
Zero (armv6l) memory barrier cp15 instruction which is different from
newer cores. I have yet to find where this is implemented in qemu source
code to investigate. @pmaydell could you please provide any pointer?

Well, first try with QEMU 6.0 and see if it's still present...

Title:
Getting qemu: uncaught target signal 6 when running lv2 plugin cross-
  compilation

Status in QEMU:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hey,
I am part of the Zynthian team and we use qemu-arm-static to cross compile lv2 audio plugins.

When running a compilation of DISTRHO-Ports we get:

  lv2_ttl_generator: pthread_mutex_lock.c:81: __pthread_mutex_lock: Assertion `mutex->__data.__owner == 0' failed.
qemu: uncaught target signal 6 (Aborted) - core dumped
  ./scripts/generate-ttl.sh: line 27: 16524 Aborted $GEN ./$FILE
Makefile:62: recipe for target 'gen_lv2' failed
  make[1]: *** [gen_lv2] Error 134
  make[1]: Leaving directory '/home/pi/zynthian-sw/plugins/DISTRHO-Ports'
Makefile:104: recipe for target 'lv2' failed
  make: *** [lv2] Error 2

  lv2_ttl_generator source is here:
  https://github.com/DISTRHO/DISTRHO-Ports/tree/master/libs/lv2-ttl-generator

The command that is ruining is
  lv2_ttl_generator ./TAL-Filter-2.so

  And ./TAL-Filter-2.so source is here:
  https://github.com/DISTRHO/DISTRHO-Ports/tree/master/ports/tal-filter-2/source

Is there a way to debug what is going on?
This runs fine on a Raspberrypi which is armv7

  A workaround would also help.

  Bug in Zynthian:
  https://github.com/zynthian/zynthian-sys/issues/59
  Bug in DISTRHO-Ports:
  https://github.com/DISTRHO/DISTRHO-Ports/issues/29

Using qemu-arm-static version from master from two days ago:
  qemu-arm version 2.12.50 (v2.12.0-1182-ga7a7309ca5-dirty), commit: a7a7309ca52c327c6603d60db90ae4feeae719f7

Also saw this in qemu-arm version 2.12.0 (Debian 1:2.12+dfsg-3)

  Thanks,
  Guy
