Hi,

this is the next version of a cleanup series for s390x.

v1 -> v2: split more, stubs removal for KVM, kvm/ move, sysemu cpu models

* "hw/s390x: rename tod-qemu.c to tod-tcg.c"
  - new patch (Cornelia)

* "hw/s390x: tod: make explicit checks for accelerators when initializing"
  - now error out and abort() for an unknown accelerator. (Cornelia)

* "target/s390x: remove tcg-stub.c" : new patch split from
  "target/s390x: start moving TCG-only code to tcg/" (Cornelia)

* "target/s390x: use kvm_enabled() to wrap call to kvm_s390_get_hpage_1m"
  - new patch, allows the removal of kvm stubs

* "target/s390x: remove kvm-stub.c"
  - new patch, we do not need stubs, as all calls are wrapped by
    kvm_enabled(), and all prototypes are visible.

* "target/s390x: move kvm files into kvm/"
  - new patch

* "target/s390x: split sysemu part of cpu models"
  - new patch

* "MAINTAINERS: update s390x directories"
  - new patch

Pre-requisite series (not really needed for now, only in further work down the line):

https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2021-03/msg07461.html

Motivation and higher level steps:

https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2020-05/msg04628.html

Comments welcome, thanks,

Claudio

this will allow in later patches to remove unneeded stubs
in target/s390x.

we stop short of renaming the actual qom object though,
so type remains TYPE_QEMU_S390_TOD, ie "s390-tod-qemu".

replace general "else" with specific checks for each possible accelerator.

Handle qtest as a NOP,
and error out for an unknown accelerator used in combination with tod.

now that we protect all calls to the tcg-specific functions
with if (tcg_enabled()), we do not need the TCG stub anymore.

move everything related to translate, as well as HELPER code in tcg/

mmu_helper.c stays put for now, as it contains both TCG and KVM code.

The internal.h file is renamed to s390x-internal.h, because of the
risk of collision with other files with the same name.

You need compile-time checks, not runtime checks. Any calls have to be
protected by #ifdef, otherwise the compiler might bail out.

Maybe you just wanted to state it differently in this patch description.

This is not true though, tcg_enabled() is #defined as 0 if tcg is not enabled.

#define kvm_enabled()           (0)

Compiler will elide the code if after the preprocessor pass the code is:

if (0) {
}

It adds the benefit of actually checking the syntax of the code inside.

As long as the prototypes are in sight, we rely on this for i386 and ARM already, to avoid accumulating stubs.

Just that we are talking about the same thing:

The following will fail to compile

void main(void)
{
         if (0) {
                 return hello("Test");
         }
}

You at least need the prototypes. But I guess we still keep them and
really only remove the stubs -- which works because the linker will
never stumble over them.

As we keep the prototypes, this should indeed work

How hard would it be to split that up as well?

Can we move that change into a separate patch, so all we're left with
are effective renames?

Yes, thjs is what I am saying.

We have all the prototypes in sight, so we are good, no need to keep the stubs.

Ciao,

Claudio

I think it works as long as we do the s390x-internal.h rename first,
and then the rest, otherwise the intermediate commit could break.

Will work on it, thanks,

Claudio
