In addition to making the code simpler, this will replace the
long error messages:
  cannot initialize crypto: Unable to initialize GNUTLS library: [...]
  cannot initialize crypto: Unable to initialize gcrypt
with shorter messages:
  Unable to initialize GNUTLS library: [...]
  Unable to initialize gcrypt
