There aren't many people who understand binman internals enough to fix things properly. Simon is less active recently, I'm not as productive as I'd like (even then I don't know the C parts), and my availability will get way worse in a few weeks. I wanted to prioritize reviews so that others' work don't stall, didn't know when this could be fixed, thus a clean workaround until then (not 'instead of') seemed OK. Anyway, doesn't matter now that I managed to send a fix, but I didn't want to keep the question unanswered.
