Hi,

Here's the 12th version of the writeback patches. Changes since v11:

- Fixup kthread_run() error check, it should use IS_ERR() instead of
  checking for NULL. Thanks Andrew.
- Fix a silly buglet that would quickly respawn otherwise idle threads
once they had exited. This was due to an inverted if test. Didn't cause
any harm except potentially too many writeback threads setting idle in
  the system.
- Integrate kupdate periodic writeback with the explicit writeback. Cleans
  that part up.
- Update to 2.6.31-rc1. With the recent patches from viro and hch, v11
did not apply cleanly at all to 2.6.31-rc1.

For ease of patching, I've put the full diff here:

  http://kernel.dk/writeback-v12.patch

and also stored this in a writeback-v12 branch that will not change,
you can pull that into Linus tree from here:

  git://git.kernel.dk/linux-2.6-block.git writeback-v12

Please test and report results/interesting finds. Thanks! The target
for this patchset is 2.6.32 and it'll be sitting (and has been for the past
week approx) in -next until then.

This is a first step at introducing per-bdi flusher threads. We should
have no change in behaviour, although sb_has_dirty_inodes() is now
ridiculously expensive, as there's no easy way to answer that question.
Not a huge problem, since it'll be deleted in subsequent patches.

This gets rid of pdflush for bdi writeout and kupdated style cleaning.
This is an experiment to see if we get better writeout behaviour with
per-bdi flushing. Some initial tests look pretty encouraging. A sample
ffsb workload that does random writes to files is about 8% faster here
on a simple SATA drive during the benchmark phase. File layout also seems
a LOT more smooth in vmstat:

So apart from seemingly behaving better for buffered writeout, this also
allows us to potentially have more than one bdi thread flushing out data.
This may be useful for NUMA type setups.

A 10 disk test with btrfs performs 26% faster with per-bdi flushing. Other
tests pending. mmap heavy writing also improves considerably.

A separate thread is added to sync the super blocks. In the long term,
adding sync_supers_bdi() functionality could get rid of this thread again.

Build on the bdi_writeback support by allowing registration of
more than 1 flusher thread. File systems can call bdi_add_flusher_task(bdi)
to add more flusher threads to the device. If they do so, they must also
provide a super_operations function to return the suitable bdi_writeback
struct from any given inode.

- * It is a waste of resources to have more than one pdflush thread blocked on
- * a single request queue. Exclusion at the request_queue level is obtained
- * via a flag in the request_queue's backing_dev_info.state.
- *
- * Non-request_queue-backed address_spaces will share default_backing_dev_info,
- * unless they implement their own. Which is somewhat inefficient, as this
- * may prevent concurrent writeback against multiple devices.

This enables us to track who does what and print info. Its main use
is catching dirty inodes on the default_backing_dev_info, so we can
fix that up.

Also a debugging aid. We want to catch dirty inodes being added to
backing devices that don't do writeback.

Not sure whether this is a good idea, hence it's at the back of the
series as a separate patch. In theory it should be fine, since all
WB_SYNC_NONE writeback is best-effort. No guarentees are made.

I tested it against 2.6.31-rc1 on a couple of machines.
1) System didn't hang;
2) Comapring with previous bdi flusher versions, I didn't find clear performance
different.

Since the caller of this function handles kmalloc failure gracefully,
should we also pass __GFP_NOWARN flag to kmalloc() here, in order to
avoid large and scary no-memory complaints?

Sure, it can't hurt.

ATM we have one timer for both data and super-block synchronization.
With per-bdi write-back we have:

1. one timer for super blocks
2. many per-bdi timers for data (schedule_timeout() is essentially
   using timers).

This is not nice, because each timer is an additional source of
power-savings killers. I mean, it is more power management (PM)
friendly to have less timers and disturb CPU less, make CPU wake
up from retention less frequently.

I do not challange the per-bdi idea at all, but is it possible to
think about a more PM-friendly desing and have one source of
periodic write-back, not many. I mean, could there be one timer
which periodically syncs supers and wakes up the BDI write-back
tasks?

I've just started looking at your work, so I do not have good overall
picture of what's going on, so apologies in advance if I missed
something.

That is correct. Note that these exit when they have been idle for a
while, for embedded and such you could make it more aggressive by
exiting quicker. The sync_supers should be directly fixable by your
sb_dirty() stuff.

So I don't think it's a huge change from what we currently have.

You could replace the schedule_timeout() by a schedule(), and instead
have a single timer running that would scan the bdi_list and issue the
kupdated() timed writeback that is the reason it uses schedule_timeout()
now. Explicitly issued work will manually wake up the per-bdi thread(s).
That single timer could easily handle waking up bdi_sync_supers() as
well.

Right. May be the way you decomposed stuff will actually make it easier
to to optimize periodic write-back and teach it not to wake up if
there is no dirt.

And we could as well use rang hrtimers to optimize events grouping.
I'll keep looking at this.

Doesn't spin_lock() include an implicit memory barrier?
After &bdi->wb_lock is acquired, it is guaranteed that all
memory operations are finished.

I'm pretty sure spin_lock() is an "acquire" barrier, which just guarantees
loads/stores after the spin_lock() are done after taking the lock.

It doesn't guarantee anything about loads/stores before the spin_lock().

The comment says that the _above_ stores should be seen before it
appears on the list, it doesn't say anything about the list itself. What
matters is that the ->seen/pending must be fully visible before it
appears on the list. A spin_lock() doesn't guarentee that, and the bdi
thread could even see the work before the spin_unlock() is started.

What happens if we are preempted here? Since we have TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE
state, we will not come back unless some other task wakes us up. Who
would wake us up in this case?

If it's preempted (CONFIG_PREEMPT=y), it will stay in runqueue. Only when
it calls schedule initiatively or calls schedule when exiting to user space,
it will be moved out of runqueue if its state isn't TASK_RUNNING.

See flag PREEMPT_ACTIVE.
