Hi,

We're trying to nest virtualisation using 64bit Xen inside a Hyper-V
virtual machine.

When we enable CONFIG_HYPERV_STORAGE and boot with the Xen hypervisor
we can't see /dev/sda. If we boot the Linux kernel without Xen it works
fine.

The full dmesg for booting with and without Xen is attached.

Without Xen, first the disk is deliberately ignored:

We would need to see `xl dmesg` to get the Xen dmesg ring as well, 
preferably with a debug build of Xen.

Perhaps that's a result of the kernel assuming to run on exactly one
kind of hypervisor (i.e. Xen _or_ Hyper-V, but not both layered on
top of each other)?

Hi Jan,
Are you saying that this isn't going to work by design?
I appreciate it's unusual to have the nested virtualisation.
We're doing this as we have an existing system that uses Xen to hosta
number of VMs which is usually installed on physical hardware.
We have had some clients want to install this system inside a virtualmachine
on their existing infrastructure. This seems to function fineunder VMware
but not Hyper-V.
As requested by Andrew I've attached the xl dmesg output, though I seenothing
obvious in it. I built Xen by doing 'make dist debug=y'.
What I did notice was that inside the /sys directory tree without Xenthere
were lots of files with a file name containing 'vmbus' but veryfew with
Xen. So I wonder if something is going wrong with thehv_vmbus driver.
I'm no expert on xen/kernel development but I'm willing to look intothis
further if anyone is able to give me any pointers.

No, all I'm saying is that this case hasn't been considered so far.

Nested isn't unusual. What's unusual is that you want a device
surfaced to a 2nd level guest that's being exposed by the host
hypervisor rather than the L1 guest one. Whether that's valid to
be done in a secure manner may need some thought, and
definitely will need code to be added afaict.

Hi Jan,

Thanks for your help. We've turned off the HYPERV options off and we can
see the
disks again, we're going to run with this for now.

Unfortunately I've ran into another issue with the DomUs hanging early at
boot
under this setup but I will open another thread for this.
