Hi all,

Note: for those that are interested in these things, there is a graph of
linux-next and Linus' tree progress at
http://neuling.org/linux-next-size.html . You can zoom by selecting a
horizontal area.

Changes since 20101011:

The arm tree gained a conflict against the arm-current tree.

The net tree gained a conflict against the ieee1394.

The trivial tree gained a conflict against the net tree.

The catalin tree lost a conflict.

The oprofile tree gained conflicts against the tip tree.

The workqueues tree gained a conflict against the gfs2 tree.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" as mentioned in the FAQ on the wiki
(see below).

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log files
in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built with
a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig for x86_64. After the
final fixups (if any), it is also built with powerpc allnoconfig (32 and
64 bit), ppc44x_defconfig and allyesconfig (minus
CONFIG_PROFILE_ALL_BRANCHES - this fails its final link) and i386, sparc
and sparc64 defconfig. These builds also have
CONFIG_ENABLE_WARN_DEPRECATED, CONFIG_ENABLE_MUST_CHECK and
CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO disabled when necessary.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

We are up to 176 trees (counting Linus' and 22 trees of patches pending
for Linus' tree), more are welcome (even if they are currently empty).
Thanks to those who have contributed, and to those who haven't, please do.

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Randy Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds.

There is a wiki covering stuff to do with linux-next at
http://linux.f-seidel.de/linux-next/pmwiki/ . Thanks to Frank Seidel.

bfa has one function that probably uses too much stack space and a few
others that might be a problem.

With CONFIG_FRAME_WARN=1024:

drivers/scsi/bfa/bfad_im.c:939: warning: the frame size of 1604 bytes is larger than 1024 bytes

and with CONFIG_FRAME_WARN=512:

drivers/scsi/bfa/bfad.c: In function 'bfad_fcs_port_cfg':
drivers/scsi/bfa/bfad.c:900: warning: the frame size of 676 bytes is larger than 512 bytes
drivers/scsi/bfa/bfad_im.c: In function 'bfad_im_supported_speeds':
drivers/scsi/bfa/bfad_im.c:939: warning: the frame size of 1604 bytes is larger than 512 bytes
drivers/scsi/bfa/bfad_im.c: In function 'bfad_os_fc_host_init':
drivers/scsi/bfa/bfad_im.c:976: warning: the frame size of 736 bytes is larger than 512 bytes
drivers/scsi/bfa/bfa_fcs_lport.c: In function 'bfa_fcs_lport_fdmi_build_portattr_block':
drivers/scsi/bfa/bfa_fcs_lport.c:2010: warning: the frame size of 572 bytes is larger than 512 bytes
drivers/scsi/bfa/bfa_fcs_lport.c: In function 'bfa_fcs_lport_fdmi_build_rhba_pyld':
drivers/scsi/bfa/bfa_fcs_lport.c:1803: warning: the frame size of 784 bytes is larger than 512 bytes

Also, there are many comment blocks that begin with "/**", which means "beginning
of kernel-doc comment block" for Linux kernel code. :(

BTW, these are on i386 builds.

For these specific cases, we declare some big data structures in the stack, which is not good
and I will fix them. But is general, is passing 512 stack size check a requirement? This seems
too strict for me since the default stack size is 8k.

Not aware of this convention. I will fix them. Thanks.

Changes since 20091009:

New tree: i7core_edac

Dropped tree: i7core_edac (difficult merge conflict)

My fixes tree contains a build fix for powerpc/kvm.

Linus' tree lost its build failure.

The mips tree lost its conflicts.

The parisc tree lost its conflicts.

The mfd tree still has a build failure so I used the version from
next-20091005.

The voltage tree gained a build failure so I used the version from
next-10091009.

The suspend tree gained a build failure for which I applied a patch.

The i7core_edac gained a difficult merge conflict against Linus' tree so I
dropped it for today.

I reverted a (possibly unintended) merge from the tip tree.

The sound tree gained a build failure for which I applied a patch.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" as mentioned in the FAQ on the wiki
(see below).

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log files
in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built with
a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig for x86_64. After the
final fixups (if any), it is also built with powerpc allnoconfig (32 and
64 bit), ppc44x_defconfig and allyesconfig (minus
CONFIG_PROFILE_ALL_BRANCHES - this fails its final link) and i386, sparc
and sparc64 defconfig. These builds also have
CONFIG_ENABLE_WARN_DEPRECATED, CONFIG_ENABLE_MUST_CHECK and
CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO disabled when necessary.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

We are up to 142 trees (counting Linus' and 22 trees of patches pending for
Linus' tree), more are welcome (even if they are currently empty).
Thanks to those who have contributed, and to those who haven't, please do.

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Jan Dittmer for adding the linux-next tree to his build tests
at http://l4x.org/k/ , the guys at http://test.kernel.org/ and Randy
Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds.

There is a wiki covering stuff to do with linux-next at
http://linux.f-seidel.de/linux-next/pmwiki/ . Thanks to Frank Seidel.
