Through the magic of git-bisect I have narrowed it down to this commit

As far as why I see this and so far others have not I have 2 guesses.
It could be related to firmware version (I have all my systems with 
the latest available version) or, it could be the version of elilo
(perhaps more of a longshot).

Or, could be my .config file (ok, now that I think of it that may be
more likely).  Attaching my .config here.  This is a custom config
that started out as the fedora 7 .config but I have made some changes
over time.

I have confirmed that it was my .config.  The panic is seen if the
kernel is compiled with CONFIG_IA64_GENERIC.  When I compiled with 
CONFIG_IA64_HP_ZX1 it worked OK.

Yasuaki,

With this patch it still panics in the same way.  I am building with
CONFIG_IA64_GENERIC and booting on an HP rx6600.  I do not have the ski
simulator either.

I tried your patch on my ski environment, and I confirmed it fixes
the "Out of interrupt vectors" problem reported by Peter Chubb.

to when it happens (fairly early in boot).  I have to admit I have no
clue as to why your patch causes this.  I don't see anything that

Yasuaki,

I did a little more debugging.  For one I re-verified to make sure it
was the commit in question that triggered this (just to be sure).  It
is.

Also, I added some printk's to figure out exactly what is going on.  It
appears that ia64_mv.setup is never getting initialized.  Any idea how
your patch might cause that?  I am no expert at this level (or really
any level) of the kernel.  Hopefully this will be more obvious to
someone.

Yasuaki,

I added a bunch of printk's to try to better understand this.
ia64_mv.setup does get initialized properly but then gets overwritten.
It appears that it gets overwritten in __bind_irq_vector but I have not
narrowed down exactly where.  I put a printk at the top and bottom of
this function to show what ia64_mv.setup is and I am finding that on the
3rd call to this function it causes ia64_mv.setup to get set to -1.

It is getting way too late for me (1AM here).  I will try to dig into
this more tomorrow but at least I have narrowed it down to a bit of code
that actually is touched by the commit that causes the panic.

I found a bug which causes wrong access to vector_table[] array.
I guess ia64_mv.setup was destroyed by this. Could you try the
attached patch?

I was also seeing a strange problem relating to the
vector domain patch which seemed to be causing
corruption of vectors_in_migration, which caused migrate_irqs()
to emmit suprious IRQ errors (when called by kexec).

I'll try and confirm that this patch soles the problem that
I was seeing tomorrow.

Hi Doug, Hi Ishimatsu-san,

I've tested both of these patches against my problem,
and I notice that they have both been incoporated into
Linus's tree.

It seems that "vector-domain - handle assign_irq_vector(AUTO_ASSIGN)"
(8f5ad1a8227aa110d633b5ed04dde535381c16c7) had no effect on
the problem that I was seeing. But "vector-domain - fix vector_table"
(6ffbc82351c62eeeeaeb9e817ddf93049353493d) appears to resolve the
problem.

As I spent quite a lot of time examining this problem I'll
put my findings below, on the off chance they are of use to
someone in the future.

In my .bss I see that vector_table is right next to
vectors_in_migration, so it seems to make a lot of sense
that inapropriate access to vector_table was corrupting
vectors_in_migration. Furthermore, I added farily large
array, vectors_in_migration_guard between vectors_in_migration and
vector_table and the problem went away, wich seems to futher
pack up the coruption caused by access to vector_table idea.

I guess that if CPU_HOTPLUG was disabled then some other table
would be corrupted, perhaps one that is accessed much more often
than vectors_in_migration.

For the record, the IRQ errors on kexec
were being caused by fixup_irqs() making inapropriate
calls to generic_handle_irq() due to the corruption of
vectors_in_migration. fixup_irqs() is indirectly called by cpu_down().

Just back from vacation - with this patch I don't see the crash
either. I do however still see the hang in the boot scripts - wonder
if we still have an overflow somewhere.

I'll do some more digging.....

FYI, booting for me just fine on a RHEL5 installed base.  What distro
were you booting on?

Hi Doug,


SLES10 and Fedora Core 7 - similar behavior. I wonder if something sn2
specific might get overwritten. Haven't narrowed it down yet.

Ok, I figured out which patch caused it, now to figure out whats wrong
and how to fix it :(
