As downstream still carries our old UMS driver in order to workaround
the catastrophic incoherency issues that currently plague the earlier
i8xx chipsets when trying to use GEM, it makes sense to integrate their
work into the main repository so that their fixes are shared and
available for all users.

This combines the EXA code from 2.6 with the most recent updates through
to 2.9 when the UMS code was removed and the distributions were forced
to fork.

To justify re-integrating this code, I'd like a show of commitment from
the distributions that this is how we should proceed. Our goal, and our
focus, is on providing KMS and GEM for Intel chipsets. We do not want
legacy/ums to hinder that, however we also do not want to leave machines
behind (i8xx, the current bane of our existence) and force each
distributions to fork their own legacy driver.

You probably heard the screams of terror at the prospect of adding 50k
lines of broken code. The result of that shock was that it did produce a
viable alternative: use a shadow fb and avoid dynamic reallocation and
associated incoherency issues.

The benefits of this approach is that we get KMS (hotplug, resizable
framebuffers, rotation, reliable suspend and resume), overlays (video)
reasonable performance, and continued development. You lose GL
acceleration. (But using GEM it would suffer the same incoherency problems
that plagued X, and unless you were also using an old DRI1 compatible
version of Mesa, legacy/ums could do no better.) You also lose EXA
acceleration, but that turns out to be a good thing in the general case,
but synthetic benchmarks will show decreased performance.

I've built this (I hope correctly*), and added the configuration**, and I get 
the following line in my Xorg.log:

[    91.311] (WW) intel(0): Option "Shadow" is not used

Is this expected?

Also, when you say "You also lose EXA acceleration", do you mean UXA? Or am I 
confused?



* What I did was modify gentoo's x11 overlay for xf86-video-intel from git, to 
pull from http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~ickle/xf86-video-intel instead of the 
normal place

** After a lot of confusion, I ran Xorg -configure, cropped the Device section 
out of its output, stuck it in xorg.conf.d, and added Option "Shadow" "True" to 
that section

That implies you are running the old driver. You should see a message like
"Shadow buffer allocated" instead.

This was a reference to the acceleration that legacy/ums attempted to
still provide. With shadow all rendering, both core, Render and GL, should
be done on the CPU with only the final blit from the shadow to the scanout
being performed by the GPU. This is done to avoid reallocating entries in
the GTT and to minimise movement between memory domains.

That sounds like it should have worked. You probably want to verify that
each of the steps completed successfully.

I forgot to tell portage to pull the shadow branch. I've got it building the 
right version now.

Now whenever I try to change screen resolutions, X crashes. Log attached,

Should have mentioned: kernel 2.6.35.3, xorg-server 1.8.2, libdrm 2.4.21, mesa

valgrind confirms that we continue to use the old buffer after the resize,
and although I've poked in a few locations I haven't found where it has
been secreted away.

I have a plan though...
