You can do backports, and I have manually done some backporting for users with similarly old kernels (using my 3.17 tree is a upstream kernel), but it is not something I do for fun. For example I am using imx6 cpu but completelly different module provider. You have to take care to have proper kernel and uboot patches for your provider but compat-wireless and ath10k-firmware could be the same for all of them.
