liuxant guys:I have already geiven them the code last year and again this
year, but they didn't use it so far. I guess they couldn't easily convert
it to an external kernel module due to the dependends on the AC97 stuff.
Have you experience with the request_frmware() stuff, then maybe you can
add it.
I don't use the laptop with the riptide chipset anymore, so I hope someone
else wants to convert it to a more recent ALSA (it shouldn't be that hard,
has the scatter/gather/memory stuff changed again?)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
tiwai - 06-24-05 15:09
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The changes are trivial in most cases. SG-buffer should be same.
But I'd work on this only if someone can test quickly the patch (and if I
have time left...)

I have tested the patch with a 2.6.12 kernel and removed all warning
messages.
It works for my Riptide chipset (hotplug needs the firmware "riptide.hex"
somewhere)
riptide.tar.bz2 contains 2 diffs, one for alsa-driver-1.0.9b and the other
for a recent 2.6 kernel ...

Thanks.
The riptide driver was added to alsa-driver tree (not alsa-kernel tree
yet).
Will be pushd to alsa-kernel (e.g. linux kernel) tree once after the
driver is confirmed to work fine with the latest environment.

I have made a patch against alsa-1.0.9b
(http://euclid.math.brandeis.edu/~gruberp/riptide-alsa-1.0.9b.patch.gz)
It compiles (at least for me), but I cannot test it since my Riptide chip
is at least 2k km away for the next few weeks.
Also I'm not sure if I put everything into the right places ;)
As far as I understand the request_firmware stuff asks hotplug to find a
firmware named riptide-fw ... make sure it finds the riptide.hex file from
the linuxant driver package under that name.

Also, it would be nice if you can contact with linuxant guys as the
original patch author. They look also for the porting of this to ALSA,
too (according to the notes in their web page:
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/riptide/limitations.php
)
Possibly they could accept to change the license to move to linux-kernel
tree...

add it.
I don't use the laptop with the riptide chipset anymore, so I hope someone
else wants to convert it to a more recent ALSA (it shouldn't be that hard,
has the scatter/gather/memory stuff changed again?)

Thanks, the patch looks nice but requires a big modification to adapt to
the latest ALSA.
If the firmware license matters, I'd recommend you to use
request_firmware() instead of the static image to push the stuff out of
the kernel tree. Then you can change your own code to GPL, and keep the
firmware binary as the original license states.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
tiwai - 06-23-05 15:26
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, it would be nice if you can contact with linuxant guys as the
original patch author. They look also for the porting of this to ALSA,
too (according to the notes in their web page:
http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/riptide/limitations.php
)
Possibly they could accept to change the license to move to linux-kernel
tree...
