Summary: ISA - 4232 has no CD sound
Description:
Switched from OSS to Alsa. Enabled sound, alsa, OSS emulation and cs4232
isa card in kernel. Tried with modules and without. Has sound but not from
the CD. System ran OSS module with sound from the CD previous to kernel
compile, so everything that OSS needed is still there.

Ah ok you're using cs4232 (the category was missing - added now).
Then there is no CD volume control indeed.
Try to turn on 'Aux Playback Switch' (or unmute 'Aux' on alsamixer).

Please attach /etc/asound.state for debugging.
I guess you didn't turn on "CD Playback Switch".
