Ok, thanks Mark and François for the answer.

I´ll stick to K6 and see what happends.

Unfortunetly that trick didn't seem to work in this case. When
I pulled some of the keys off, they looked a little marred, must had
been something in the beer. Oh well, I was just happy it only got
the keyboard and not anything else underneath. :)

I do this on a somewhat regular basis with all of my keyboards.

Actually, let them soak in the tub for a while, then dry.

Older keyboards probalby work better for this actually.

I remember vojtech repairing Toshiba's keyboard (my little brother
managed to get beer into it) by just showering it with hot water,
waiting it to dry, and reinstalling.

Alan,

Just one question: in a perfect world, as for the moment in this
notebook MK7 CPU optimization is not a choice, which should be the
highest recommended CPU optimization setting that I should try/run ? .

M586MMX
M686
MPENTIUMIII
MK6 (my supposition)

Thanks in advance,
Jorge Carminati.

The AMD K7 stuff will trigger hardware bugs on some VIA boards. We know
that bit. Why the RH one crashes may be that or may be a different bug
fixed between 2.4.9->16.

Either way this is good news. The machine seems fine and the newer kernel
seems to be behaving well.

Hi!

Well, I have some news regarding my case.

Brief for the impatient: IMHO it's a kernel bug.

7pm: I arrived home from work; as suggested by Alan I ran memtest86
(v.2.8). I let it make two passes as to have a first impression. NO
memory error was found. It took ~24 minutes for each pass (240 Mb total
(256Mb - 16Mb used for video card)). Meanwhile I was compiling in my
Mandrake workstation a kernel optimized for i386 as suggested by
François Cami.

7.50pm: I spent a couple of minutes repairing with fsck my ext3
partition; had a lot of freezes the previous day.

8pm: I ftped the kernel to the notebook (first attempt failed; kernel
froze again (Red Hat's default kernel) second attempt was ok). Rebooted
and logged in in init 1. I typed some commands, and later started X
Window, no freeze. Next I launched lot of applications, just to try a
very basic memory stress. I started to enjoy Linux in my notebook.
After an uptime of 1:40 hour I decided to switch to the next kernel
optimized version: i486.

9.40pm: Booted i486 kernel. Made some basic tests, played with XFree86,
while at the same time for first time I was compiling a newer kernel
using this notebook (using Red Hat's 7.2 default gcc, etc). This newer
kernel was optimized for 586/K5. Rebooted after an uptime of 30 min
without a freeze.

10:15pm: Played a lot with this new kernel for almost 1:30 hour, no
freeze suffered.

Last thing I did was to compile again a newer kernel for the next cpu
type (I think it´s named "Pentium Standard" or something similar). I´ll
test probably on saturday this kernel as I went to sleep.

In all the cases the compiled kernel had set exactly the same options,
**just changed the cpu optimization type**. Kernel version 2.4.16.

I was thinking, as suggested by Alan, to ran memtest86 all night long,
but as didn't suffered in 4 hours a freeze, I discarded this idea.

Conclusion: IMHO it´s a kernel bug. The same .config optimized for AMD
freezes, and Red Hat's default kernel does the same. Luckily for my
investment it´s not a memory bug.

I'll investigate when this bug is introduced playing with the cpu
optimization setting. I'll post my results probably next monday.

If anyone has any kind of suggestion or want me to test something in
particular please let me know.

Kind regards and thanks again.

Alan,

The custom made kernel (2.4.16) I tried yesterday (compiled under my
Mandrake workstation and ftped to the notebook) didn´t have the APM
option set. I could post the .config but first, as to discard a memory
error as you suggested, I´ll try tonight memtest86 and see what
happends.

Thanks.
jc.

At least one possible cause is that the runtime kernels will use APM power
management and other facilities that the install kernel intentionally avoids
because a tiny number of boxes have it broken.

You can boot with extra boot options (apm=off I believe it is) to disable
APM use.

One strange thing that I want to share with all of you is that I
installed two times Red Hat in this notebook during this week, and no
freeze was suffered during the whole installation process, which is a
process that as you know requires almost an hour to complete.

I´m just asking why the kernel doesn´t freeze during the installation
process (which it is supposed to run Linux I suspect :) ) and just
after booting and typing some commands in init 1 mode, it freezes;
quite strange.

I have downloaded memtest86 v.2.8, and will test tonight.

Thanks for all the help.
Jorge Carminati.

Hi Jonny,

The notebook is a Compaq Presario 701LA (700 series). It is a notebook
for the Latin American market, you can find more technical information
regarding this notebook at: (in spanish)

http://www.compaq.com.ar/hogar/prod_pres_701.html

Almost all the time I ran in console mode my tests, no graphic mode as
it freeze very soon the kernel after booting.

Thanks,
Jorge Carminati.

Thanks Alan, I´ll test tonight the ram with memtest86.

Any suggested setting for memtest86 ?.

Ok François, I´ll try it tonight, first attempt compiled for i386.
Tomorrow I´ll post the results.

Ok, you spend U$ 1800 (that´s the price here) for a "not so high grade"
Compaq memory... sounds lamentable

Anyway, I installed a fresh Red Hat 7.2 copy, which doesn´t comes
optimized for AMD, but the freeze is there...

Jaswinder:

Ok, but per default Red Hat 7.2 comes optimized for i386 and anyway
it´s freezing. The second test I made was just to discard a possible
problem related to the CPU optimization, which unfortunately did not
worked.

Understood the other problems, thanks.

There is a problem with the athlon optimizations, if you compile
for a PPro or lower your kernel should run stable, although probably a little
bit slower.

Have a 705US here, some other problems you might run into:
	* Compiling IO-APIC into the kernel will cause ACPI to hang on boot.
	* Sound will not work, both OSS and Alsa drivers load fine,
the sound even appears to be decoded fine, it just won't
reach the speakers. Seen several posts from people having
the same problem, haven't seen any solutions yet.
	* The X-windows drivers don't seem to like shared memory much,
programs like ogle or mtv appear to crash X, also managed to
get LyX to reliable crash X too.
	* If you ruin the keyboard by spilling something on it, lie and
and say it just stopped working ;) Telling the truth got me
nothing but aggravation trying to find a replacement part, and
I wasn't paying anyone $100 to take two screws out and pop the
keyboard out in less than 5 minutes.

* Kernel freezing....

Hi !

This is my first post; I'm just a simple LINUX user since a long time
('96) that have bought a new notebook last weekend and am having lot
of hangs while trying to run LINUX.

The distribution that I installed is Red Hat 7.2. with default
kernel. (Later, I made a test compiling in another machine 2.4.16
with minimal settings and optimized for AMD, but the results were the
same while trying this newer kernel in the notebook).

The problem is that after a couple of minutes of use it starts to
dump kernel messages, and it ends freezing completely. Almost all the
time I ran in init 1 mode (single user).

If someone needs more information I'll send it.

The notebook is a Compaq Presario 701LA (700 series) with 256 Mb RAM
and an Ext3 partition of 4Gb with a 100Mb swap partition.

*** If someone can help me please CC to jcarminati@yahoo.com as I'm
not subscribed to this list ***.

Thanks !

P.S.: The notebook works fine under Windows XP, just to discard a HW
failure.
