Hi All

I have been principally using KDE.
I have Gnome configures.
So I decided to configure Ice-WM.
Does anyone know how to configure the desktop by adding different backgrounds
add icons to Ice-WM?

Thanks

Frank

Nope. And the fact that the word "kernel" is in the name of the hosting
domain (*not* the name of the list itself) does not make it so. The list is
for general, beginner level questions.

Sorry, Frank, but I don't know the answer to the (perfectly reasonable)
question you asked. I use neither KDE nor icewm.

You need to look for the configuration files "preferences", "menu" and/or
"toolbar". These will be located under either under ~/icewm or ~/.icewm
or in the global ?/icewm. I'm sorry to report that I can't tell you at
the moment where the global dir is located. The files mentioned need to
be ferretted through and edited to your liking (they're
well-commented). There are also gui front-ends for modifying the config
files, but I can't tell you the name of it/them at the moment,
unfortunately. Sorry if this is not much help for you. I've fiddled a
bit with configuring icewm, but don't consider myself any sort of expert
at it. I never did figure out how to place shortcuts/symlinks on the
desktop.

James

Anupam: this is a newbie list, period. Sure, It's supported by kernel.org,
but people is free to ask whatever they want. Perhaps you would like to join
the kernel development list?

Anyway... about your question... I use Gnome... not ice-wm... and I don't
plan to. I rather use the console as often as I can.. and when I need it
(for playing quake3 principally) run Gnome.

Hi All

Thanks for the comments concerning Ice-WM.

It appears that for practical reasons I am stuck with KDE and Gnome.

I was hoping that ICE would be better tan KDE but that does not appear the
case [for my usage].

Thanks for the help.

Perhaps it was not the proper list, I could even agree with you there, but
the question is not entirely off-topic. Specially being a newbie's list.

We all were newbies (and proably still are, you would never compare yourself
with Torvalds... would you?). So we should understand all these kind of
things and try to use the RTFM and STFW fewer times... we don't like those
answers... do we?

Thanks,

PS: I agree with you... the question was a little off-topic, but not
entirely. And google would have solved it in two minutes... but... still
off-topic.

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the clarification. I'm already subscribed to linux kernel.
But I still don't believe that here we should've questions related to
Window manager configuration. That is as general as asking, "Which
distribution should I install?" Secondly IceWM is not linux specific.
One can install that on BSDs, Solaris and even on M$ platforms. In that
sense, the question is not linux specific, however newbie it is.
Anyway, if majority doesn't favor my thoughts, I'll better stay away
with _posting_ on this list.

his question is just as valid as any other I have seen on this list .
and how is his question invalid just because ICEwm runs on other systems ?
He is after all just asking a question
YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO FLAME HEM
I guess you got to be a linux expert with out asking questions

Unfortunately, it seems that IceWM doesn't support desktop icons, you
have to use another program as a desktop. Get dfm (Desktop File Manager)
and use it with IceWM. The line in xinitrc should look like

exec dfm& icewm

Now you may configure desktop wallpaper and icons by right-click on
desktop the same way as in windows.

However, if you need just wallpaper on a desktop without icons, IceWM
can handle this, look in 'preferences' file. Usualy

~/.icewm/preferences or /usr/X11R6/etc/X11/icewm/preferences

There should be strings like

# DesktopBackgroundColor = "rgb:55/55/7f"
# DesktopBackgroundColor = ""
# DesktopBackgroundImage = ""

Just uncomment and edit them.

Hope this helps.
