  changeset: 23735:537918f518ee

  date: Sat Jul 23 08:49:15 2011 +0100

add privileged (dom0) kernel feature indication

With our switching away from supporting 32-bit Dom0 operation, users
complained that attempts (perhaps due to lack of knowledge of that
change) to boot the no longer privileged kernel in Dom0 resulted in
apparently silent failure. To make the mismatch explicit and visible,
add dom0 feature flag that the kernel can set to indicate operation as
      dom0 is supported.

Due to the way elf_xen_parse_features() worked up to now (getting
fixed here), adding features indications to the old, string based ELF
note would make the respective kernel unusable on older hypervisors.
For that reason, a new ELF Note is being introduced that allows
specifying supported features as a bit array instead (with features
unknown to the hypervisor simply ignored, as now also done by
      elf_xen_parse_features(), whereas here unknown kernel-required
features still keep the kernel [and hence VM] from booting).

Introduce and use elf_note_numeric_array() to be forward
compatible (or else an old hypervisor wouldn't be able to parse kernel
specified features occupying more than 64 bits - thanks, Ian!).

add privileged (dom0) kernel feature indication

With our switching away from supporting 32-bit Dom0 operation, users
complained that attempts (perhaps due to lack of knowledge of that
change) to boot the no longer privileged kernel in Dom0 resulted in
apparently silent failure. To make the mismatch explicit and visible,
add dom0 feature flag that the kernel can set to indicate operation as
      dom0 is supported.

Due to the way elf_xen_parse_features() worked up to now (getting
fixed here), adding features indications to the old, string based ELF
note would make the respective kernel unusable on older hypervisors.
For that reason, a new ELF Note is being introduced that allows
specifying supported features as a bit array instead (with features
unknown to the hypervisor simply ignored, as now also done by
      elf_xen_parse_features(), whereas here unknown kernel-required
features still keep the kernel [and hence VM] from booting).

Introduce and use elf_note_numeric_array() to be forward
compatible (or else an old hypervisor wouldn't be able to parse kernel
specified features occupying more than 64 bits - thanks, Ian!).

Is it certain this isn't just hitting the problem fixed in 23742:50ddc200a60c?
Given the log fragment you provided yesterday, it didn't look like that was
related to the change pointed out here.

I think it is exactly hitting that problem. However, that problem
masked the other bug which was presumably introduced somewhere in
between. If you didn't introduce regressions you wouldn't be blamed
for regressions :-).

Sadly this means we can't easily see when the other bug was
introduced. I will see if I can do the bisection by hand, applying
23742 to each commit.

If the bug is almost certainly between 23736 and 23741 inclusive, then it
*has* to be one of 23736/23737. Which are both by the same author (Jinsong
Liu @ Intel) and both concern machine-check support: quite vendor-specific
and high risk for breaking other vendors. So you can just confirm it's one
of those two and then punt the problem to Jinsong...

If it's really this changeset it's a bit weird. It would have to be due to
the more permissive table validation causing us to enable ACPI ERST support
based on a bad BIOS table, or a table which for some reason we're not
supporting properly, or a class of machines (e.g., AMD) for which our ERST
logic is not currently implemented properly.

Does reverting just the change to erst_check_table() fix the regression on
the affected test boxes? What about the similar-looking boot failure that
you see, Jeremy?

Indeed, reverting xen/drivers/acpi/apei/erst.c, ie the change to
erst_check_table, seems to fix it. That is,

23736:31683aa4bfb3 "acpi: Add support for old and new bios erst, ..."
   +
  23742:50ddc200a60c "fix regression from c/s 23735:537918f518ee"

fails. That plus the diff below boots happily.

Indeed, looking at the logs of a "successful" boot I see:

Aug 9 14:52:11.680207 (XEN) ERST table is invalid

The complete boot log from an affected machine is below.

Firstly (14:51 to 14:53), a successful boot with

23736:31683aa4bfb3 "acpi: Add support for old and new bios erst, ..."
   +
  23742:50ddc200a60c "fix regression from c/s 23735:537918f518ee"
   +
  reverting the change to erst.c

followed by (14:55 onwards) a failed boot with

23736:31683aa4bfb3 "acpi: Add support for old and new bios erst, ..."
   +
  23742:50ddc200a60c "fix regression from c/s 23735:537918f518ee"

In the "successful" boot, note these exciting messages:

Aug 9 14:52:17.901200 [ 0.000000] ERROR: Unable to locate IOAPIC for GSI 2

Aug 9 14:52:17.913206 [ 0.000000] ERROR: Unable to locate IOAPIC for GSI 9

Probably none of them. I suspect that exciting messages are de rigeur with
pv_ops (not really a criticism, just the fact that the dom0 support is still
perhaps a bit raw, and developed with an eye to upstreamability rather than
providing the ultimate in clean boot logs).

Perhaps we should be reverting the erst patch at least, or maybe both
patches, pending a fix ?

Ian.

I'll revert the change to erst_check_table().

It looks strange to me. Native linux also update it to work well at different bios platform.
We have tested it at our 'old' and a 'new' platform, it works well with the patch.
I'm not sure why it cannot work at the machine you test.

Jinsong

It's obviously a latent bug in our handling of that table, which is
uncovered only when that table-validation check is relaxed to permit parsing
of the table on a much broader range of machines. Perhaps we can work with
you to run some out-of-tree patches to gather useful tracing information on
failing machines?

Sure, and of course thanks for help me co-debug it :)

Seems it's not a quite urgent bug, so may I firstly complete Xen RAS core error recovery patch?
I will have vacation for 2 weeks from Aug 19, before that I hope to make core error recovery patch done.
When I come back, I will fix this bug ASAP, is it OK for your plan? If not, please let me know.

Thanks,
Jinsong

There's no rush now that noone else's development or testing is blocked on
it.

  commit 1894049fa283308d5f90446370be1ade7afe8975
  Author: Jan Beulich <jbeulich@suse.com>
  Date: Fri Jan 20 09:17:33 2023 +0100

      x86/shadow: L2H shadow type is PV32-only

Like for the various HVM-only types, save a little bit of code by suitably
"masking" this type out when !PV32.

      Signed-off-by: Jan Beulich <jbeulich@suse.com>
      Acked-by: Andrew Cooper <andrew.cooper3@citrix.com>
