Hi,

first of all a happy new Year.

Below is a bug-report. As you will see [problem happens only with 1GB of MM],
there is still a small posibility, that the problem is caused by faulty hardware.
Thus I add the following questions:

a) may this problem at all be a real kernel bug?
b) Do you have any hint for me to track down the bug?
Note: next week I may have an other Computer to make an other 1GB test.
I am also planing to make a test using user-mode-linux.

All the best, Walter

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[1.] One line summary of the problem:
Contents of files in main-memory is messed up when using cryptoloop and aes

[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
When unsing aes and crytoloop some files seem to be changed.
This happens only with 1GB of main memmory.
Furthermore it happens also with a stripped down kernel,
i.e. just the basic features compiled in the kernel:
pci + aes + cryptoloop + xfs + other basic function (see attached config file)
With 0.5GB of main-memory the same computer does not have this problem.
This 0.5GB test was done by taking out memory or adding mem=512M as a
        kernel parameter.
The main memory has been tested with memtest86 (version 3.0).
Also three other different computers with 0.5GB of main-memory and
the same software do not have the problem.

[3.] Keywords (i.e., modules, networking, kernel):
        aes, cryptoloop, filesystem, 1GB main-memory

[4.] Kernel version (from /proc/version):
Linux version 2.6.0-test (root@marvin) (gcc version 2.95.4 20011002 (Debian prerelease)) #31 Thu Jan 1 21:50:54 CET 2004

[5.] Output of Oops.. message: Not applicable

[6.] A small shell script or example program which triggers the
     problem (if possible)
        a)
Boot computer with a very basic kernel and with init=bash
        Line from /boog/grub/menu.lst:
        kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.0-test root=/dev/hda2 init=/bin/bash
        b)
        just call by hand:
        losetup -e aes /dev/loop0 /dev/hda4
        c)
        mkfs.ext2 /dev/loop0
This call may already fail, it happend with "segmentation fault"
        and "illegal instruction".
        Also a second call of
        mkfs.ext2 /dev/loop0
caused a "can not execute" message from bash.
A "file /sbin/mkfs.ext2" tells, the file is data.
After "cp /sbin/mkfs.ext2 /sbin/mkfs.ext2.error" and reboot
the two files /sbin/mkfs.ext2 and /sbin/mkfs.ext2.error differ.
I.e. the first 80% of /sbin/mkfs.ext2.error contain nonsense.
        Sometimes one may continue with
        mount -t ext2 /dev/loop0 /mnt
and after more tests the system goes bananas.

[7.] Environment
It is basicly a debian system, distribution sid, using xfs filesystem.

[7.1.] Software (add the output of the ver_linux script here)
If some fields are empty or look unusual you may have an old version.
Compare to the current minimal requirements in Documentation/Changes.
