ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/akpm/patches/2.6/2.6.12-rc5/2.6.12-rc5-mm2/

- Dropped bk-acpi.patch. Too old, too much breakage.

- A few more subsystem trees have moved to using git

- There are a large number of patches here which fix patches which people
have already sent. A very large number. Are we getting a bit careless?

Well, it's recommended it Documentation/SubmittingPatches. I don't know
how else can I generate a diff for more than one file.

This made my asus-acpi work again.

DRM/DRI seems to have stopped working since -rc5-mm1.
-mm1 reported a badness in syslog (see my previous report int rc5-mm1
announcement thread), while now something is silently failing: glxinfo
reports

libGL warning: 3D driver returned no fbconfigs.
libGL error: InitDriver failed
libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering

while nothing is traced in syslog.

Linus' rc5 works fine instead.

Bye.

but even just publishing releases using git would be great.

(Just now I'm tracking Linus with my tree. git makes that quite easy.
Tracking -mm is ugly manual work with diff, patch and ketchup...)

I have written a script (actually a leftover from the mm-to-BK import
days) that pulls -mm into git as individual commits.

Andrew: Could you prefix the patches you pull from git with this
line:

GIT SHA1-of-their-top-commit URL-of-their-archive

so that I can annotate the commits with an appropriate second parent?

If you never do any changes oon top of -mm, but only merge with it (or
them), then this works out quite well.

This small patch silences some iomem-related warnings in sunzilog.c
by declaring mapped_addr as void __iomem * and inserting a cast in
one case.

Can you look in dmesg for where it loads the drm and radeon drivers?
and agp? attach a dmesg from Linus tree and from -mm if you could..

Dave.

-rc5-mm2 breaks for me with the attached config. The attached patch fixes
it for me. It's because I have CONFIG_MODULES but not CONFIG_MODULE_UNLOAD.

kernel/module.c: In function `module_add_modinfo_attrs':
kernel/module.c:1078: error: `modinfo_attrs' undeclared (first use in this
function)

The best solution for this would be to check the available protocols at
setup time and not at connection creation time. This would also provide
a better feedback to the user, since he will either see that what he set
was taken, or it wasn't.

In the current mechanism you can set the protocol to 'foo' and it will
show back as 'foo'. You'll get complaints only once a connection is
attempted with this protocol.

It does mean some extra work in the sysctl stage, but it's better IMO to
do it there rather than at connection setup time.

Your right, the sysctl handler should be smarter, but that is not the problem here.
The problem is that the default value is set to be BIC to be compatible with earlier kernels.
Since 75% of the world isn't smart enough to figure out how to use sysctl, there is a
question of what the default should be, and what to do if that is missing.

One version had a messy ifdef chain to try and avoid the warning:

char sysctl_tcp_congestion_control[] =
#if defined(CONFIG_TCP_BIC)
	"bic"
#elif defined(CONFIG_TCP_HTCP)
	"htcp"
#else
	"reno"
#endif
	;

but that was ugly.

Another possibility is putting it in as yet another config value at kernel build time.

To suppress the warning repeating, probably the best solution would be rewrite the string
if we have to revert to reno. But carefully to avoid SMP issues. This also implies a smarter
sysctl string handler for this value as well.

P.s: saw your comparison paper, after a little more corroboration I would like to make
H-TCP the default.

This results in recursive dependencies:
- IPW2200 depends on NET_RADIO
- IPW2200 selects IEEE80211
- IEEE80211 selects NET_RADIO

This patch fixes the IPW2200 dependencies in a way that they are similar
to the IPW2100 dependencies.

I think the normal usage of the name is Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG/2915ABG
Network Connection. I'm just saying this in case that you care about Intel
Trademarking or about a more unified usage of the name of the Adapter.

maybe this is something silly.

One thing that currently makes all solutions harder (and the #ifdef
example above not ugly but simply wrong) is that you allow modular
congestion control options for the always static net support.

Is this really required?

The IO schedulers have a similar problem, and they are using the #ifdef
approach for selecting the default.

One approach is to actually choose the default using #ifdef's.

You could also do any kind of runtime selection, but please don't print
the warning more than once.

Hi Andrew,

in case 2.6.12 should fully support gcc 4.0:

The only patch from -mm that seems to be required for fixing a
compilation on i386 with gcc 4.0 is
  drivers-net-hamradio-baycom_eppc-cleanups.patch

Whether this is feasible or not is your choice.

Great! Would it be possible to export results of your script

Hi Andrew,

I'm encountering the following annoying bug messages in 2.6.12-rc5-mm1
and -mm2 that I can't reproduce in 2.6.12-rc5 with the sym53c8xx_2

driver is compiled into my kernel, and reading from the drive seems
OK. Booting -mm2 I get the following :

Here is what I am working on as better way to make the sysctl selection.
I am not totally happy with the way the default congestion control value is determined
by the load order. But it does seem good that if you load "tcp_xxx" module and it
registers it becomes the default.

Looks good.

Maybe we should call this tcp_get_current_congestion_control(), the
current name implies (to me) that you give it a name and it returns the
the ca struct. get_current might also just return the current one and
the strcpy can be done here.

Otherwise you probably should document the tcp_get_congestion_control()
to say what size of string it accepts.

Sure, can do. Gimme. ;-)
