Best we can do is cc various USB people then wait.  Things are slow at
present due to summer migratory activity towards Ottawa.

But when the flock returns, hopefully they will remember that we have a
straightforward box-killing regression in the 2.6.17 OHCI controller quirk
handling.

It's hard to come up with a fix without knowing what's wrong.  The current 
development version of that subroutine is essentially the same as the 
version in 2.6.17.

If you want to pin down the problem more precisely, try adding a whole 
bunch of printk() statements to the quirk_usb_handoff_ohci() function in
drivers/usb/host/pci-quirks.c.

More likely in some other code, since that "quirk" handling code hasn't
changed in forever.  Sometimes BIOS changes hurt (including setup/config),
sometimes pci/acpi init is a factor.

Was it stable for you with 2.6.15 kernel? With gentoo live cd (it was 2.6.15 
or 2.6.16, don't remember) it wasn't for me. 2.6.18-rc4 is now stable for me 
once hacked out the acpi_skip_timer_override quirk, as I mentioned in another 
thread. But till now I got no response about that...

Why don't you think this is usb problem?

I use motherboard ASUS M2NPV-MX, I use Fedora 5. I got the same
problem that you had, after I upgrade kernel from 2.6.15-1.2054 to
kernel-2.6.17-1.2174_FC5, it hung on boot:

So I guess this related with new nforce chipset, but have no idea
which components got trouble.

Seems one of the quirks has gone bad.  The below should tell us which one. 
You'll need to correlate it with the machine's lspci output please.

I was only able to scrounge 5 minutes on this system this morning.

I just installed SUSE 10.1 on that very motherboard. It seems to work fine. I 
can even run windows under Xen using the SVM on the processor.

The kernel I'm currently running is 2.6.16.21.

I tried to install the linux-image-2.6.17-1-amd64-k8-smp debian package
on a ASUS M2NPV-VM motherboard based system and it hung during boot. The
last message on the console was:

Anyone got any suggestions? Unfortunately, this is a production server
so I'm going to get very little time on it to try things out. For the
moment, I've reverted to 2.6.16 where it seems basically stable (there
are occasional hangs with the hard disk light hard on which is why I
tried out 2.6.17).
