Hmm, snd-hda-intel is used by different sound cards. So I am not
sure wether all these need that option? If yes, it would be
hardcoded, though.

I don't have an ICH chip available handy, so maybe we need some
input from alsa-devel?

You're absolutely right, it's not needed for all chips. Hopefully, there
is some way to autodetect when it's needed and when not. Unfortunately,
I have no idea how to do that. I'd be happy to run any tests on my
machine that might be necessary to work it out, though.

If needed, it's a bug.  The model option is just a workaround.

Whether a certain device is supported or not purely depends on the
driver version.  So, without proper information which version is being
used, the report makes little sense...

I think I included the version information in the original report (in
the Debian BTS). Just in case:

alsa-base 1.0.13-3
the kernel is 2.6.18-3-686

Do you need anything else?

Well, they don't represent any real ALSA versions.
2.6.18 is way too old, and really tons of fixes have been done since
then.

Try the latest ALSA driver HG version (which has been almost included
in 2.6.21-git tree), and we'll fix if the problem is still there.
