Hi,

I have created a sparc-leon git repository on kernel.org. Currently the
master branch is just a clone of sparc-next. There is a branch named
experimental which contains our current patches:

To start with it would be great to receive feedback on the patches
against the SPARC architecture:

I suggest that you start with:
1) Initial posting that explains what leon is.
2) A serie of patches against existing files - logically splitted.

   Quickly browsing the link you gave tell me there is some stuff
   that needs to be redone.

When 2) is reviewed and agreed on continue with the leon specific stuff.
But do not expect much to be applied until the full set is reviewed.

You will obviously hit the fact that knowledgeable sparc people are
a scare resource so you must do everything you can to make it
easier for them to review your stuff.

Consider copying lkml on the patch set - there is more people there
that can give feedback.

Maybe to be added:
The LEON processor was created by Jiri Gaisler who has risen to fame lately by
winning the Open Sparc Community award together with Martin Johansson .

They integrated the SPARC-T1 into the "GRLIB" framework. The sparc-LEON
processor is one part of "GRLIB".
The idea that might catch you is: when running linux on a FPGA
programmed with a sparc-LEON design you run a system that is open source
from the gate level upward.
the sparc-LEON is distributed as GPL source and can be downloaded from
www.gaisler.com.

Already did this. As you will see in the listing below the existing
file patches are marginal and easy to understand.

The patches against existing code are written so that

   if the toplevel macro CONFIG_LEON is not defined, no code-change for
   the original sparc part is taking place.

Therefore I guess it should be not so difficult to review these patches. I'll explain

Hello everybody,


I work for Aeroflex Gaisler (formely Gaisler Research) which develops
the LEON SPARC V8 processor. It is a synthesizable soft core CPU written
in VHDL and used in a wide range of applications.

We are currently maintaining our own Linux kernel and distribution for
the processor but would like to contribute it into the mainline kernel.
We understand that this will require some time and work in cooperation
with the SPARC Linux community.

Some technical background information about the LEON CPU:

LEON3 is fully SPARC V8 compliant and has a standard SRMMU as well
(except we support 4 to 32 kB pages). The cache system is VIVT with
keys but can do snooping on the physical addresses. The cache is
write through and configurable in regards to number of sets, way size
and replacement algorithm.

It has a AMBA AHB/APB bus system and supports SMP. There is a rich set
of peripherals that can be added to your typical SoC system such as
10/100/1G Ethernet MAC, USB host controller (EHCI/UHCI), USB device
controller, PCI, ATA, SPI, CAN, etc.


We have received an account on kernel.org and will maintain a sparc-leon
git repository there. I guess sparc-next is the proper repository to
clone as a base for our patches?

Is there any special way that you would like us to structure our code
to fit into the current SPARC tree as painlessly as possible?

Internally we are however at version 2.6.29 and will be setting up

Hi Konrad.

If you want this reviewed then please do as asked and send a set of individual mails
each containing one logical change - with a description what it contains.
I (and others too) do not go hunting to find patches to review.

From the list below I can see you have a logical split of the changes.
So you just have to add the corresponding patch too.

If you did this before than document what was changed since then, which
review comments was addressed and especially which was not (and why).

This is a good example why you should send the patches to the list.
It should be a matter of adding a comment telling you not to use "dafault n".
But now you force me to:
1) copy the link
2) paste it and open in in a browser
3) copy relevant source from browser
4) paste in in my mail client
5) then comment on it.

Had the patch been inlined I had saved 1) 2) 3) 4) and only had to delete a few lines while
staying in my mail client.

So please inline patches - with good changelogs.

Ok, I can do this (next week). This would be 20 mails for 20 files. Is everybody on the
list ok with it?

I'm not familiar with how patches get applied. Can someone describe
who actually is checking in a patch so that it appears in the final kernel?
Is it you (Sam)?
Is this patch sending only a "review" or do they get checked in afterwards?
If it is only a "review" who is then the one that actually checks them in?

Yes they are.

Try to send one to yourself first and check that you can properly apply the
patch in the mail you receive. This is a good check that your mailer does
not destroy the patch.

For sparc davem would apply them.
I guees he prefers someone to address all the easy stuff before he starts
looks at them. This is where I and other helps.

A few other things you can do to ease review/integration is:
1) run all patches through checkpatch (see scripts/checkpatch)
   Try to address the relevant warning/errors.
   It is not a prerequisite you are down to 0/0 - but
   it eases review that you have addressed the obvious things
   that checkpatch can warn you about.
2) Run the code through sparse.
   Use "make C=2".
   Again it is not a prereqisite that you are down to 0 warnings.
   But at least having declaration for all functions and
   variables are a must.
   And fix all usages so you use NULL and not 0 for a null pointer.
   One main reason to do so is that you then are not faced with
   a lot of janitorial mails doing so after you have had your
   code applied.

   To get sparse you should clone this version of it:
   http://git.kernel.org/?pÞvel/sparse/chrisl/sparse.git;a=summary

   This is the most updated version atm.

   Do not be shy and ask for help if you cannot dechiper the warnings.
