Since we are changing mailing lists now, I have to say, can't the ARM
_kernel_ mailing list just be hosted as an open list at
linux-arm@vger.kernel.org and be done with? *Please*? All this moderating,
subscribing, cross-posting and flaming is really troubling.

Regards,
David.

Since we are changing mailing lists now, I have to say, can't the ARM
_kernel_ mailing list just be hosted as an open list at
linux-arm at vger.kernel.org and be done with? *Please*? All this moderating,
subscribing, cross-posting and flaming is really troubling.

Regards,
David.

I guess you subscribed everyone to the new list who was subscribed
to linux-arm-kernel@lists.arm.linux.org.uk before, but did not
move the "don't send any mail" flag.

I was only subscribed to the old list so that my own mails would
go through, but disabled reception of all other mails. No problem
for myself, but I think it would be good not to resubscribe anyone
who did not want to receive mails on the old list. Otherwise
we're risking a similar mess to what happened when the powerpc-dev
and powerpc mailing lists were merged.

I subscribed to the list so I can post to it, however I read the list
via GMANE's NNTP gateway. To prevent me having to 'read' posting from
both my usenet client and email client, I enabled the 'don't send any
mail' flag.

I am guessing there are others like me out there so this would be an
awkward 'fix'.

Cheers

Well, since you no longer have to be subscribed if you want to post
to the new list, and you can still read the list through an nntp gateway,
I would assume that it works for you as well.

Fair enough, just thought we were contining the norm from before? I
hope that does not mean we get the amount of spam we see on the MTD

Hm, that would have been a good idea if I had that information. Still,
it's done now -- people can easily unsubscribe.

Apologies to those inconvenienced, but it's probably better that way
than for people to drop _off_ the list without noticing.

Lots of people posting on the list going "What is all this mail? Make

merged the overall volume increased).

Hi David.

Can I ask why you want to host this mailing list and if there's any
advantage in hosting the list at infradead.org over vger.kernel.org?

Is this list going to be moderated?

cheers, Joe

I meand powerpc-dev and powerpc-embedded. The -embedded list had
gathered hundreds of subscribers over the years that were subscribed
only in 'digest' or 'no mail' mode and were totally overwhelmed
with the traffic on powerpc-dev. Contrary to what you expect to be
the minimum level of intelligence required to subscribe to development
mailing list, a huge number of them subsequently flooded the list
with messages saying 'please unsubscribe me please' or the like.
Needless to say, there was a clear instruction on the bottom of each
mail telling you how to unsubscribe.

Russell didn't want to do that, so I offered an alternative solution
preserving the three separate lists (l-a, l-a-kernel, l-a-toolchain).

Ok, so which of the new lists should former linux-arm-kernel subscribers
be subscribed to? I'm confused, I've seen mention of four different
lists now: three at infraded, and one at vger. :)

It looks like the linux-*@lists.arm.linux.org.uk have been moved to
linux-*@lists.infradead.org with all the subscriptions transferred as
well. So for kernel, it should be linux-arm-kernel@lists.infradead.org.

If unsure, cc LKML.

Would it be too much to ask that linux-arm@vger be used for ARM kernel
development, with the other two lists at infradead? Maintaining multiple
kernel development lists was one of the problems mentioned, with people
unsure as to which list to subscribe to and having to subscribe to both
lists in case mails were posted to the vger list.

Maintaining a _single_ kernel mailing list would be ideal.

Regards,
David.

Hm. There's no accounting for the stupidity of the human animal.

We considered doing it as a mass _invitation_ (which needs the
subscriber to click the link to confirm) rather than a mass
subscription. In general, I think it's better to err on the side of
inclusion -- so I decided against that because I thought too many people
wouldn't notice it and would fall off the lists as a result. Perhaps
that was the wrong decision, but I suspect nothing is gained now by
going back and changing things, even if I _did_ have the required
information.

Even with the notification and the first major thread being "ARM Mailing
lists have moved", you're right that there are probably a few people who
are _so_ stupid that they can't manage to work it out. I've sent a mail
with words of one syllable or fewer to each list, which might hopefully
help -- but I'm sure there'll still be some.

When that happens, we'll unsubscribe them -- and send in the ninjas to
ensure they don't accidentally breed.

Nothing has changed. There were always three lists: linux-arm (for
userspace stuff), linux-arm-toolchain and linux-arm-kernel.

If you were subscribed to linux-arm-kernel before, then you are already
subscribed to linux-arm-kernel now. The list has just moved, that's all.

(And as Arnd points out, we lost the 'nomail' settings for some
subscribers. Which is unfortunate, but I'm sure people will cope.)

Backup - if after a few months of arguing dwmw2 gets upset as well and
shuts the new lists down :-)

I don't think there'll be much change from before. I think the front end
filtering is fairly much the same; the main difference between the lists
is the moderators. The moderators of the ARM lists are very active and
happy to filter things by hand -- like setting it to 'hold' messages
from non-subscribers, then approving them manually, which catches a lot.
I've been a bit lazy with the MTD list because I wanted to do as much as
possible automatically (although Artem does a wonderful job in his spare
time).

It's about time I updated some of the things I _do_ do automatically,
though; I've been neglecting that for a while too. You're the first
person to complain to me; I'll take a look and see what I can do.

The Judean People's Front.

Or, more seriously, it's for those who want to discuss ARM Linux without
involving Russell in any way. That _also_ hasn't changed.

That might be the motivation for some, but certainly not for everyone.

Some people simply prefer the vger list server to lists.arm.kernel.org.uk.

I don't have a preference for that, but I do have
a preference for lists without arbitrary latencies
for manual moderation.

The other advantage of the vger lists is they are hosted in a place
where the EU's insane Data Protection Act (or maybe it's an insane
interpretation of the Data Protection Act --- I haven't seen any other
EU based list be subscriber-only based on some claim that the Data
Protection Act required it) doesn't apply.

davem created that list as a response to some discussions about the moderation
on the (now former) arm-kernel list.
It never took of mainly because Russell wanted to keep the lists on
the ARM machine he had to do some stability testing.

Then the vger folks did some misconfiguration that made it
defunct for a long time.

[I'm susprised why we did not just add a arm-toolchain@vger + arm-userspace@vger
and be done with it. The mail admins cope with a lost of lists and thye would
barely notice a few more]

To give Pavel and davem a warm feeling inside (although that maybe just
the residual hatred of moderated mailing lists - god help them if they
decide to submit stuff to other projects like ALSA).

Actually there's already an ALSA list on vger already; IIRC the main
reason for not migrating to it is not getting round to actually doing
the switch rather than anything else.

Dear Russell,

I'm amazed at the news that the list has been changed with other, now,
if the patch that was acked by you, whether I can submit it to your
"Kernel Patch System" yet or not via
"http://www.arm.linux.org.uk/developer/patches/"?

I've been lurking on this list for some time, trying to find the time to participate - sadly still lacking.

I'd like to thank Russell for doing an excellent job. It's not easy managing lists and pleasing people......

Well, since you no longer have to be subscribed if you want to post
to the new list, and you can still read the list through an nntp gateway,
I would assume that it works for you as well.

I take it that the archives will appear here: http://lists.infradead.org/
and the netiquette linked there applies also for the moved arm lists?

The new archives should already be appearing on lists.infradead.org,
yes. We'll look at importing all the old mail too.

I believe that mails are still being added to the original archive too.

> and the netiquette linked there applies also for the moved arm lists?

Yes. It's fairly much the same, isn't it? Apart from the bits about
having to be subscribed and not cross-posting?

Plus it makes sense to limit the "you may not delete Re: in reply"
limitation. Automated patch submitting scripts do that.

Yeah, anything with '[PATCH' in it gets a bye on that rule iirc.

David,

I canot find the 'List-Id' that is usually present on other mailing list,
which I normally use as a filter condition. Could you please help check
if this is possible on lists.infradead.org?

It's there. Taken from your mail header:

List-Id: <linux-arm-kernel.lists.infradead.org>

You can get false positives if you filter on that.

The most reliable way to filter mailing lists is on the reverse-path
(which often appears in a Return-Path: or Sender: header at delivery).
That should match 'linux-arm-kernel-bounces.*@lists.infradead.org'

But the List-Id header definitely does seem to be present.

That's the one you got directly from him, not the one that came via the
list. You should have received the message twice -- once into your
mailing list folder, and once into your inbox (depending on how you set
up your filters).

Mailman does have some idiotic filtering crap by default which might
drop you if you appear to be Cc'd, but I believe I turned that off.

Is GMail doing deuplication of messages and picking the wrong copy to do

Dear David Woodhouse,

In message <1251705959.16594.88.camel@macbook.infradead.org> you wrote:

IIRC mail headers are case sensitive, and what I see in the messages is
not "List-Id", but "List-id:"; RFC2919 uses the former format.

That's interesting. Can you check that's what you actually have in your
mailbox files? I see "List-Id:".

(Well, I do see 'List-id:' in Evolution, but who'd use Evolution if they
wanted to reliably see what their email actually _says_? You should see
the mess it makes of the nicely formatted spam reports from
SpamAssassin.)

Argh... the actual files have "List-Id:", indeed. Sorry for the false
alarm.

I'm not using Evolution, but exmh / nmh. I was not aware before that
it does such changes when displaying header contents. Arghhh...

Best regards,

Wolfgang Denk
