Hi all!

I'm installing a v210 with gentoo. Originally I compiled gentoo's
stable hardened 2.6.28 kernel package (which uses grsecurity), which
worked rather well.
Then I tried to upgrade the kernel to a fresh, grsecurity-patched 2.6.31.
This failed at the first boot, so I tried to see which part in this pile
introduces the bug. Eventually, I removed all nifty patches, and went
back to a plain vanilla 2.6.31.6 kernel, booted with nosmp.
And I still have the freeze, so that's why I'm here :)
(The .config came from the working 2.6.28 kernel, updated by make menuconfig)

The boot logs (good & bad) are attached, together with the .config file
of the new kernel built.

I'd appreciate any help to track down the problem.

Regards,
Laszlo

It's a well known issue we've been trying to track down for some time
now. We still have no real idea what the exact problem is.

Somone has a remote console setup for me to diagnose this remotely
since none of my own systems trigger this behavior.

Is this the same NMI watchdog issue that I reported with v240?
Is that last sentence incomplete (s/has/has to do/)?

No, it's the one where the system hangs in the middle of firing
a uevent after the first device registers.

No it is not, Hermann Lauer is the person who has set this
up for me.

Does it help if I try to narrow this down both the kernel version introducing
this, and the minimum set of config options with which I can still
reproduce it?

The most useful thing would be if you could use GIT to
bisect down to the exact commit which introduced the
problem.

Okay, I'm almost done with the config options (almost everything is off,
except for a few cpu & memory flags, and I still get the freeze, I
switched everything off, now it ends after
[ 103.151812] turn off boot console earlyprom0
probably I managed to get rid of the console device :),
if you give me some advice on how to use git, I can probably manage it.

Laszlo

This sounds like CONFIG_PROM_CONSOLE which you should disable in any
version (it was later removed).

> if you give me some advice on how to use git, I can probably manage it.

Get a tree like this:

git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6-stable.git

(That is going to take some time.)

Then follow the instructions manual page git-bisect(1)
http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/git-bisect.html

If you confirmed that the last good version was 2.6.28, and that the next
stable release and all after that are bad, it looks like you may want to
use a sequence like this:

git checkout v2.6.29
git bisect start
git bisect bad
git bisect good v2.6.28

You will then get the checkout in a state where it's half-way between those
two. Compile that (make) and install it (something like
gzip -c vmlinux > vmlinuz; sudo installkernel 2.6.29-rc3 vmlinuz System.map;
adjust that version as it happens in the current Makefile).

Make sure silo.conf is set up to enable you to go back, and then boot the
newly-compiled version. If it works, come back into the git tree and issue
'git bisect good'; if it doesn't, boot the previous kernel and do
'git bisect bad'. Either action will shift the checkout halfway again,
but in a different direction. Then recompile again, install, test.
Eventually you will get it down to a single commit.

OK. Just in case, if you're interested, I can give you access to our v240s
regarding that other problem.

Just to let you know, thats what I found on my SunFire880/480:

Date: Fri, 6 Feb 2009 11:28:25 +0100

Will try your config with a 2.6.28 kernel next week. Could you please provide
your working 2.6.28 vmlinux binary on the web/ftp so that I can try this
on my machines ?

Thanks,
  Hermann

What I have found so far with 2.6.31.6:

I have read the threads in the mail archives about your & Sebastien's
problems, and it looks pretty much the same to me (with log timing printout
switched off, the last characters I see is 'Test').

CONFIG_PROM_CONSOLE has already been ripped from the kernel so I don't
have to switch that off.

If I leave CONFIG_SMP in, then the problem is there. I stripped off almost
everything (all block devices, all character devices, all filesystems, all
networking, even PCI support), and I still get the freeze. Even if I
specify nosmp to the kernel.
However, if I switch off CONFIG_SMP, then the problem goes away. I
cross-checked this also with my gentoo hardened 2.6.31, will all my nifty
features turn on, but SMP off, and voila, everything works - well, at
least on one CPU.

Now I'm going to see which kernel update introduced the problem.

Here's the 2.6.28 kernel that worked for me:

Guys, here's the first change that makes my v240 unbootable:

commit e5553a6d04421eec326a629571d696e8e745a0e4
Author: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
Date: Thu Jan 29 21:22:47 2009 -0800

sparc64: Implement NMI watchdog on capable cpus.

    Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

I tried to patch -R this onto 2.6.31.6 for a cross-check, but some of the
changes have already been undone, so I guess it's not trivial to do this.

Dave, how to go on now?

Regards,
Laszlo

Try just editing arch/sparc/kernel/pcr.c and in the pcr_arch_init()
function make it not call return nmi_init() but just return 0.

ends very soon with:

Rebooting with command: boot gem:dhcp
Boot device: /pci@8,600000/network@2:dhcp File and args:
Timed out waiting for BOOTP/DHCP reply
Timed out waiting for BOOTP/DHCP reply

{2} ok

So for the SunFire 880/480 still no kernel >=2.6.27 found booting.
At least made netbooting working again, hope this helps davem.

Thanks anyway,
