Hello,

I am attempting to boot the 2.6.33.2 Kernel on the LogicPD LiteKit iMX31.
we have a board based on this one, and I am using it and the dev kit with no
success.

I see a lot of support in the mainline kernel for this board, is it safe to
assume someone is able to boot this board using it?

I am running the lolo bootloader from Logic, version 2.4.0.

I have compiled the kernel using a fairly new ltib environment.

Currently I run 2.6.19.2 from Freescale / Logic with success but now desire
to upgrade the kernel to something with better MMC support, I am not stuck
on 2.6.33.2 if someone can recommend a newer kernel that has some of the
support I desire.

When I attempt to boot the kernel, It hangs and this is my only output:
Uncompressing Linux... done, booting the kernel.

I have dug around a little bit as I get my feet wet in kernel
initialization, and would appreciate any debug pointers or solutions or
direction on how to solve this.

I have located two other people posting to these mailing lists with similar
problems indicating it binds up in some asm prior to start_kernel so far my
analysis is indicating the same thing.

Thanks in advance for any response I receive.

Yes, that should work well. I've just recently used this board for
development.

Could you set CONFIG_EARLY_PRINTK=y in your .config? If that doesn't
work, please post your config.

Thanks,
Daniel

Ah, one more thing: You need to pass a new variable to the kernel upon
startup: "mx31lite_baseboard=1". This was done in order to split module
code from baseboard code.

In case you're using the 2-stage loading mechanism, you need to teach
this to your first-stage loader.

Also make sure you're downloading the full image to RAM from LoLo. The
new kernel is certainly bigger than the version you currently use.

Thanks for the response,

I have added that parameter and still no love,

LOLO 2.4.0 provides the tags so I simply upload the kernel in elf
format and execute it passing the bootstring,
I also modified an older second stage bootloader I have from Hasan and
added the parameter and tried that for same result.

I think you are onto something regarding the whole kernel being
uploaded tho, as during uncompression I only get 3 periods and with
other working kernels I get much more, however it does complete
decompression.

this is why I attempted the Hasan bootloader again as I provide the
image as raw and provide the actual size in bytes.
this did not give any different results however, and the kernel
decompression still stops at 3 periods and states done, booting the
kernel.

so using the Hasan bootloader I provide:

load raw 0x81000000 1073016 /tftp/192.168.1.161:zImage
exec 0x800d03a8
Uncompressing Linux... done, booting the kernel.

then hang.

Ok, well I think my problem was simply that I did not have the console
enabled! Oops!
and once I seen the LED light go solid, I figured it was locked.
(must not be being turned off)

I will mention that the serial port defaults to the 9600 baud implied
by the driver, this was also giving me trouble.
I note it attempts to read current state and use it, but must get it
wrong have not dug deeper yet, simply changed default to what the
bootloader is using 115200

I cleaned up my config some more, removed some redundant stuff got it
to boot to Oops from lack of FS support.
cannot get to the NFS server, digging into that.

Can I get a break down on how far you have run this kernel? Do you
have file system support?
I notice the NAND driver is throwing bad erase block warnings on a
large number of blocks, I will change SOM and see if it continues.

Exciting stuff! looking forward to helping move this forward as I get
the stuff I need working working, thanks a bunch for your help.

Yes, you should pass that on the kernel command line.

Proably also some config issue? Works well here.

I can fully boot the board via NFS and have a working system with
Ethernet, MMC/SDIO, LED, GPIO, SPI and USB support.

I'll again check for NAND and NOR later today, but I'm sure the chips
are at least probed correctly.

Thanks for your input.

I got the NFS to mount, was missing an option in the config.

but now I get a panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

I verified I am passing the string via bootloader:
init=/sbin/init
this is a symlink to my busybox.

I think perhaps this is a complier problem, not 100% sure tho.
I believe I have recompiled the busybox via ltib and that should have solved it.

can you tell me what toolchain you are using to compile this kernel?
where you obtained it? did you compile it yourself?

I am using one from an older ltib, as the current one they are using
throws the error that it miscompiles the __weak directive.
I am using:
 gcc-4.1.2

gcc-4.1.1 is the one that throws the error.

I notice that these drivers are loading correctly, and look good as
far as the initialization goes.

I did an erase on the memory, and this has stopped the bad block
warnings, good enough for now.

Thanks!

That can have tons of reasons. Try setting CONFIG_DEBUG_USER=y in your
.config and pass user_debug=255 in the kernel command line. That will
give you a more verbose output about why user space programms crash.

Earlier in this thread you said that you run the same RootFS with an
older kernel, at least I got you so. If that's true, compare their
configs again.

My rough guess is some confusion in the OABI/EABI and floating point
settings.

I'm using buildroot (http://buildroot.busybox.net) for such things, and
the complete toolchain is built from scratch, yes. Eventually, you'll
get a complete rootfs.
