Hi all,

Changes since 20100722:

New tree: xen

Dropped tree: xen (build problems)

Linus' tree lost its build failure.

The sound tree lost a conflict.

The kgdb tree gained a conflict against Linus' tree.

The catalin tree gained conflicts against the arm tree.

The xen tree gained build problems so I dropped it for today.

The workqueues tree gained conflicts against Linus' tree and the cifs tree.

The staging-next tree gained conflicts against the net tree.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" as mentioned in the FAQ on the wiki
(see below).

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log files
in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built with
a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig for x86_64. After the
final fixups (if any), it is also built with powerpc allnoconfig (32 and
64 bit), ppc44x_defconfig and allyesconfig (minus
CONFIG_PROFILE_ALL_BRANCHES - this fails its final link) and i386, sparc
and sparc64 defconfig. These builds also have
CONFIG_ENABLE_WARN_DEPRECATED, CONFIG_ENABLE_MUST_CHECK and
CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO disabled when necessary.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

We are up to 167 trees (counting Linus' and 22 trees of patches pending
for Linus' tree), more are welcome (even if they are currently empty).
Thanks to those who have contributed, and to those who haven't, please do.

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Jan Dittmer for adding the linux-next tree to his build tests
at http://l4x.org/k/ , the guys at http://test.kernel.org/ and Randy
Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds.

There is a wiki covering stuff to do with linux-next at
http://linux.f-seidel.de/linux-next/pmwiki/ . Thanks to Frank Seidel.

compal-laptop uses power_supply interfaces so it should depend
on POWER_SUPPLY.

Hello,

I just downloaded today's next and built it, then booted. Sound is not
working, my card is:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio
Controller

I am now booted with latest git kernel and cannot provide more info
here, I rebooted with that kernel because I am going to sleep and I like
to listen to music by night. If more details is necessary I could boot
that next tommorow, but tell me what you need.

Regards,

Piotr Hosowicz

Commit 8b8edefa (fscache: convert object to use workqueue instead of
slow-work) made fscache_exit() call unregister_sysctl_table()
unconditionally breaking build when sysctl is disabled. Fix it by
putting it inside CONFIG_SYSCTL.

Make sure that your mixer setup is correct with a new kernel.
Usually alsactl restores the right mixer values, though.

At best, run alsa-info.sh (with --no-upload option) on both kernels to
compare. Also you can try to pull only sound git tree instead of
linux-kernel to identify whether it's a problem in the sound tree or
somewhere else. Anyway, see Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio.txt for
some details.

thanks,

Takashi

I do not see such script, alsa-info.sh. I dont know how to pull only the
sound tree. Tommorrow morning I will check if there is a new main kernel
version and build it. Should I expect that there will be a former
problem again ? If so I will investigate it deeper.

The location of the script is found in the document mentioned above.

The sound git tree URL is found in the document mentioned above.
Just do git-pull onto your cloned Linus tree.

Honestly, I don't know. There is too little information to
analyze...

I don't knmow how to pull _onto_ existing files. git says that it is not
a repo and refuses to download files, I thought that first I have to
make git clone, but I was happy that it's not like that.

First clone, then pull onto it,

  % git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git
  % cd linux-2.6
  % git pull git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tiwai/sound-2.6.git

Anyway, if your codec is either IDT or STAC codec, try the latest sound
git or wait for tomorrow's linux-next tree. A fix regarding the volume
was committed today.

This is what I tried but the second git invocation failed saying that
thre is no repo info in that directory.

I bet it is not a problem with volume, because it (fresh from linus
repo) prints error messages when loading alsa sound during system start.
Something that there is no sound device, as far as I remember.

You need to pass the branch. In this case, pass for-next

 % git pull git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tiwai/sound-2.6.git for-next

With which kernel did it work at all...?

It contains other two branches, topic/misc and topic/asoc.
(Also sometimes missing fix/asoc and fix/misc merges).

topic/asoc branch is specific to ASoC, so very likely irrelevant.
If any, some changes in the sound core code in topic/misc might
influence in your case...

Ok, so I'll use for-next then. Thank you again, you taught me a lot.

I guess you hit the regression fixed right now, so slipped from
today's linux-next. The patch is below.

(The reason why topic/hda branch worked is that I pulled the changes
to topic/misc branch from Jaroslav's tree because his branch
contains more other changes than HD-audio specific. And I forgot
about this commit until today, grrr.)

thanks,

Takashi
