Hi,
I was looking atthe GRUB Manual (1.99) trying to work out how to install a
theme, and I noticed in the first section of chapter 6 a
"docs/example_theme" mentioned which I cannot find anyware. Ive looked in
Bazaar repos, and downstream (Ubuntu) source/binary packages (I couldnt find
the upstream source for 1.99).

So, this could be a bug - example_theme not packaged - or it could be
another - incorrect referance in manual.

Also is there no official GRUB Theme? If I had an example_theme I'd be happy
to develop an official theme.

An official GRUB theme would be great! For example themes see
http://download-mirror.savannah.gnu.org/releases/grub-extras/themes.tgz
as well as http://apebox.org/wordpress/linux/261/. Make sure to be
careful about the licence of any components of the theme (images,
required fonts, etc).

Quick question though: How do I choose a theme?

I tried (In Ubuntu Natty 11.04 - GRUB 1.99) setting GRUB_THEME to the
theme.txt file (/boot/grub/themes/winter/theme.txt) of Colin Bennett's
originonal "Winter" theme, which didnt work - am I doing something
wrong there, is it Ubuntu or is the theme just outdated?

Thanks - oh and as far as licencing, just GPL it, or are other
licences more applicable for artwork?

The theme is outdated. An updated version of it is included in the
themes.tar.gz I linked to.

The example theme(s) and documentation are a lacking spot that I have
been hoping to address for a while. A while back, I told Vladimir I
would update the example theme to use appropriately free fonts and
images since some of my example items may not be license-compatible with
GRUB. I just haven't had a chance to take care of it yet. :-( All my
own work on the themes is GPL but I used some other fonts from my Linux
distro and some graphics such the "winter" background, and some Ubuntu
elements in the ubuntu themes for instance are not GPL.

If you have time and are willing to develop an official theme, that
would be fantastic, since I just don't have time right now. It would
be great to see this area improved!

Regards,
Colin

If you create the theme yourself from scratch, including fonts,
pixel-by-pixel, line-by-line, you can release it under any license.
However doing so would take a lot of time. There is a lot of artwork
available under different free licenses. But you need to keep track of
licenses of files you use and consider following:
1) Redistribuable. This is foremost requirement. Everybody must be able
to redistribute the resulting theme under the applicable license. So you
can't combine elements under contradicting license terms.
2) Free. GRUB isn't linked with themes, so themes aren't covered in any
sense by GPL. In fact GPL for artwork may be impracticable depending on
circumstances. There are other licenses better suited for artwork, like
e.g. CC-by-sa. It has however to be free as per GNU policy.
