Hey there,

as most of us are concentrating batman-advanced now, Marek suggested
that we should create a new logo for our next generation mesh technology. ;)

The "old" ascii logo is still great, but most people associate it with
the layer 3 BATMAN ...

Therefore, I made some sketches and would like to ask for opinions from
the list. Any comments, suggestions, criticism are welcome. My current draft
is this one:

http://packetmixer.de/batlogo/bat_gimped3.jpg

you can find some more sketches here (maybe you like another sketch more ...):

http://packetmixer.de/batlogo/

looking forward to your feedback,
	Simon

personally, I like this one the most. The feedback gathered from bystanders
goes into the same direction.

Anyone another opinion or suggestions ?

Cheers,

Hello,

Marek, thank you for your feedback (also thanks to others who sent me
messages in private).

As per Martin Hundebolls suggestion I've added a version with a (visually)
separated head, tell me what you think. :)

http://packetmixer.de/batlogo/bat_gimped3_headsep.jpg

BTW, we will also need a vector version from the final logo, anyone
volunteering? :)

Cheers,
	Simon

A vector version is not really a problem... a clean vector version would be
more work ;)

Hi guys,

I would be happy to make you a clean vector version!
Suddenly this is perhaps my only contribution to batman-adv at the
moment :-)

Regards,
Franz

Hey Martin,

wow, thanks for the quick reply, that would be great! Lets just wait
until we have a final decision.

With the vector logo, we can print t-shirts, flags, cups, ... all the
merchandise we need :D

Hello Sven, Franz,

wow, so many people volunteering! Sven, thank you for your work!
We will need something to give to the print services for the merchandise,
but I have no experience which format they will expect.

However, I'd suggest to wait with the conversion until we have
decided on the final logo. Otherwise we will have to convert
again and again ...

Thanks!
	Simon

Hi,

a good print service should be happy with PDF, EPS, PS and of course
professional file formats like Adobe Illustrator. Fortunately a black
and white doesn't need any color calibration :-)
I would go with PDF because this way it's most easy and failsafe for
everyone to preview the file.

By the way. If you think about stickers, foil-cuttings or stencils for
airbrush, it would be better to not have the Bats head separated from
the body.

Regards,
Franz

I still prefer the previous version. The separate head requires more attention
before the picture becomes clear. At first sight it looks a bit "unusual".
IMHO a logo should be "obvious" right from the start.

Marek

Hey there,

as suggested by Sven, here is the final modification - a little bit
smaller feet, which should be more aerodynamic. So far, most ppl
voted against the head separation, so we will skip it.

http://packetmixer.de/batlogo/bat_gimped3_smallfeet.jpg

I'd like to call a final vote between small and big feet. The
winning version will be our new logo. After all these
comments and modifications I think we can call it a real
open source logo ... ;)

Cheers,
	Simon

Hey,

attached you find my first try of vectorization and simplification of
the smallfeet-version.
It has very low vector count but perhaps it's already too much different
to the artists concept.

Franz

Quite impressive work. I really like it. The wings look extreme good and the
only "big" difference are the glasses (upper left frame, right earpiece), ears
and back/tail.

Kind regards,

Thanks Sven!

The upper left frame of the glasses has the wrong shape. But perhaps the
glasses should anyway be kept more angular shaped as in the original
version and also a little bit larger so that they overlap the head more.
Perhaps this was the artists intention and I don't want to interpret it
wrong :-)

But nevertheless I was thinking about two small modifications:
  - Should the left wing also have a convex curve like the right wing
instead of a concave?
  - Should the ears be a little bit curved like in the vector version or
straight lines like in the original version?

Regards,
Franz

Hello Franz,

thank you very much for your work! It looks really great and smooth!

Sven is currently at my place, so we have worked on some details together:
 * We've changed the glasses a little in some details
 * We have added an outline version to have the black logos on black/dark T-Shirts. :)
 * We have shortened the tail a little so that the outline does not create some "closed holes"
 * Seems we have decided on the "small" feet

Regarding your comments:
 * I'd like to keep it in the concave version for the left wing. We have tried the
convex version (both might be somehow correct ;] ), but we like the original version more.
 * The ears look great the way you drew them!

Our version is uploaded here:

http://packetmixer.de/batlogo2/

We should keep the svg version as the "original"/"only" version and convert bitmaps from it
if required.

I hope everybody liks this version, we can keep this then as the final version.

Cheers
	Simon

mmm the front shape of the two wings is different

the front of the left shape is like ) but should be (at moment the
whole logo looks like )^-^) but should be like (^-^)

sorry to not be so clear but i am not native English speaker, and it's
difficult for me to express clearly what i am trying to say, if i have
time next days I'll do some sketch to be more clear but i hope you can
understand what i am saying without that ;)

This was the concave/convex discussion. We came to the conclusion that the
current way of drawing both wings is not wrong (perspective wise) and the
artists likes the convex+concave wings more.

Just to explain the perspective: Get some tube and cut it to get something
which looks like a halfpipe. Now take it and try get the same perspective used
in the logo (put the "tube" horizontally in front of you, the open part of the
"halfpipe" directly facing you and move your head slightly to the right). You
will see that one end looks like a convex curve and the other one like a
concave one.

Kind regards,
	Sven

yes but this is not a cutted tube

for the perspective I think that the shape shouldn't be affected so
much, yes it is influenced but not so much like in the logo

Hey Gioacchino,

you may be right that the perspective may be correct the other way.
It depends on the interpretation.

We have played with a convex left wing but did not like it, it looked
rather humble and fat.

Therefore we decided to keep it like that.

A bat wearing sunglasses is not the most realistic thing either, don't
you think? ;) Therefore I'd like to ask to excuse this unrealistic
detail.

Cheers,
	Simon

Hey there,

we've declared this version official now and also have a little news
entry on the open-mesh.org website. The logos are available for download
as well. Good job! :D

One thing we could still do is to replace the redmine favicon with our custom
version. I gave it some tries and created some versions, but all of them
were really ugly. ;)

If anyone is good in drawing icons and can squeeze our bat (or just the head, or
anything) into a 16x16 pixel logo, please don't hesitate to send one to us. ;)

Cheers
	Simon
