Hi Folks,

I'm running linux 3.3.2 on slackware64
13.1 as a firewall and ipsec gateway.
I'm experimenting a problem on one of
the nics: I see the rx_dropped packets
counter increasing. Running tcpdump on
that nic (eth2) 'fix' the problem: the
counter doesn't increase anymore.
The only remarkable running daemon is
openswan 2.4.15

Same problem happens with linux 2.6.37

The connection is at 1000Mbit/s copper,
full duplex.

Any feedback are welcome
TIA

This is the output from lspci -vv about the nic:

When linux receives a packet with no protocol handler, we increment the
rx_dropped counter.

When you start a tcpdump, all packets are handled, so we dont increment
rx_dropped for this reason anymore.

Marco,

Do you see any packet drop at HW level?
How are you measuring drop packet? ethtool -S ethx shows you any packet drop?
Also can you please send me the eeprom dump of you card/LOM. ethtool -e ethx

Hi Dave,

as pointed by Eric, the counter is
increasing because a windows box is
sending out packets with ethertype

all is in good shape

0x886d or 0x86DD? That second one is IPv6, you might just need to load the module.

FYI, a Google search for "ethertype 886d" revealed that this is
supposedly an Intel ANS probe. See:

Marco,

Looking at the eeprom dump you provided, looks like this issue may get fixed by eeprom update.
Would you please try eeprom update script, fixeep-82574_83.sh , from
https://sourceforge.net/projects/e1000/files/e1000e%20stable/eeprom_fix_82574_or_82583/

Hi Dave,

Sorry for the huge delay.
I have applied the update, but I see the dropped packets.
