I am hoping that by joining this list I can get some kind of assistance
with this bug in the subject line. Every one to one and a half days my
system will just lockup with a black screen and only the mouse cursor
shown. It can be moved but will not go to the desktop. I can CTRL>ALT>F1
to a terminal and login then run sudo reboot and reboot the system. The
complete error shown in my syslog is:
kernel: [93991.808012] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck
timer elapsed... render ring idle
I have filed a bug report at the Ubuntu Launchpad for this -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1402331 and also
have added information to the one opened at freedesktop.org -
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=75394
This all started somewhere around kernel version 3.13.0-35 and has
progressed from there. I have noticed a lockup in all of these kernel
versions which I have tested:
3.13.0-031300-generic
3.13.0-44-generic
3.13.0-45-generic
3.13.0-46-generic
3.19.0-031900-generic
4.0.0-040000rc2-generic
4.0.0-040000rc4-generic
I installed 4.0.0-040000rc5-generic yesterday however Gnome Tweak Tools
did now correctly (not allowing me to add extensions) so I booted into
the latest kernel from Ubuntu that was also installed yesterday which is
3.13.0-48-generic #80-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 12 11:16:15 UTC 2015 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux.
There have been several instances where I'll have the black screen,
movable cursor (lockup) however the 'hangcheck....' error notation in my
syslog will not be present.
I've attached the output of 'sudo lshw' to see if it will be of any
assistance in solving this.
Any help would be appreciated. Apologies in advance if this is an
inappropriate post for this list but I'm running out of places to turn
to looking for help in solving this.

Definitely recommended to get latest kernels going first. For ubuntu
there's excellent howtos and also nigthly builds of drm-intel branches:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/

Daniel, yesterday I had another lockup while opening up another desktop
window. The system just froze but as usual background operations such as
fetchmail, procmail, spamassasin and so forth continued to work just
fine. This morning I installed - 4.0.0-997-generic #201503201505 SMP Fri
Mar 20 15:07:05 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux which is the
current DRM Intel kernel from the link you sent. I'm keeping my fingers
crossed that this will fix the issue as I'm really getting tired of
having the system lockup every 1 1/2 to 3 days especially if I'm in the
middle of doing something important. I'll keep you updated if this
happens again and will then probably go to a newer drm kernel release if
there is one.

Jani, I have previously filed a bug or added information to a bug on
this:
[1] https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=75394
[2] https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91495
The kernel being run at the time of the freeze was when this post was
made - 3.19.0-59-generic #65~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 19 18:57:09 UTC
2016
The video froze again this morning, however the 'Hangcheck..render ring
idle' error was not noted in my syslog. The kernel being run at the time
this happened - 3.19.0-59-generic #66~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 13
17:27:10 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I've added drm.debug=14 to my grub.cfg file to get the output you asked
for in the next freeze. Do you want me to open a new bug or add to [1]
or [2]?

Your report is lacking in details... like which kernel you're running,
and have you tried a recent kernel.
Please file a bug at [1], and attach dmesg with drm.debug=14 on the bug.

I'm still seeing this periodically, previous to today it happened on
April 24th. Doesn't matter what I'm doing the video will freeze however
the cursor will still move. Only option is to SSH in to the system from
my tablet and do a reboot.
Note: This has been going on since Sept 13, 2014. There could be as
little as a few hours between freezes or as much as 30 or more days.
