I remember I had a similar disagreement with Dave on the long vs
short pointers when doing the initial common btree work, and
I prevailed using the flag :)

Below is a patch to on top of your for-dave-for-4.8-2 branch
which uses the flag, but also keeps your useful refactoring.

This both reduces source:

 6 files changed, 61 insertions(+), 136 deletions(-)

as well as binary:
