I am not sure if this is a real problem or not, but I have found the
following:
$ line --version
line from util-linux 2.27.1
$ line <<< "$( printf '\naaaaaaaa' )"
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
$ line <<< "$( printf '\naaaaaaa' )"
$
$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
Release: 16.04
Codename: xenial
$ uname -a
Linux yankel-Lenovo-G505 4.4.0-36-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Thu Aug 11
18:01:55 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

the current stable is 2.28.2

it seems fixed in the current upstream tree
