I am curious about this, how can slub try to alloc compound page but the order
is 0? This is wrong.

Nobody seems to know how this could happen. Can any logs shed light on this?

After checking the code, kernel can handle such case. So please ignore my last
comment.

The warning is reporting OOM, first you need confirm if you have enough free
memory? If that is true, then it is not a programmer error.

The kernel is not OOM. It just failed to allocate for GFP_NOWAIT which
means that no memory reclaim could be used to free up potentially unused
page cache. This means that kswapd is not able to free up memory in the
pace it is allocated. Such an allocation failure shouldn't be critical
and the caller should have means to fall back to a regular allocation or
retry later. You can play with min_free_kbytes and increase it to kick
the background reclaim sooner.

Michal, thanks for clarification.
It means if any application allocate for GFP_NOWAIT and we not having
enough free memory (RAM) we will got this warning.
For example:
$ free -ht
              total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem:            30G         27G        277M        1,6G        2,8G        593M
Swap:           59G         21G         38G
Total:          89G         48G         38G
I see that computer have total free 38G, but only 277M available free RAM.
So if we try allocate now more than 277M we get this warning again, right?

I try reproduce it with kernel 4.13.8, but get another warning:

Well, not really. As soon as we hit a so called low watermark the
background reclaim (kswapd) kicks in and that will try to free up some
of the reclaimable memory. Allocations are still allowed to go on. It is
only when we hit min watermark when the allocation has to perform the
memory reclaim in the allocation context (so called direct reclaim).
GFP_NOWAIT request cannot sleep and as such they cannot perform the
direct reclaim and have to fail. So this thing usually happens when the
allocation pace is larger than the background reclaim can free up in the
background.

this is a sleeping allocation which means that it is allowed to perform
the direct reclaim and that took a lot of time here. This is really
unusual and worth debugging some more.

This tells us that there is quite some page cache (file LRUs) to reclaim
so I am wondering what could have caused such a delay. In order to debug
this some more we would need an additional debugging information. I
usually enable vmscan tracepoints to watch for events during the
reclaim.

so no, this looks like a separate issue.

I able got the needed tracepoints logs.
If I understanded correctly vmscan tracepoints are possible enable by
option 1 in the file /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/vmscan/enable

I was able to catch this issue again.
Is there anything interesting in the trace logs?

I was waiting for Michal's comment, but it seems that he is too busy now.
Thus, I post non-authoritative comment here. (I'm not a tracepoints user.)

Two stalls were found in dmesg but only PID = 2798 part was recorded in the trace logs.

  [ 6109.502115] chrome: page allocation stalls for 10321ms, order:0, mode:0x14000d2(GFP_TEMPORARY|__GFP_HIGHMEM), nodemask=(null)
  [ 6109.502179] chrome cpuset=/ mems_allowed=0
  [ 6109.502570] CPU: 0 PID: 2798 Comm: chrome Not tainted 4.13.9-300.fc27.x86_64+debug #1

So, trying to analyze this one.

Since 10 seconds of blank was found between mm_shrink_slab_start and
mm_shrink_slab_end, this alone can cause stall warning messages.

  # tracer: nop
  #
  #                              _-----=> irqs-off
  #                             / _----=> need-resched

  #           TASK-PID   CPU#  ||||    TIMESTAMP  FUNCTION
  #              | |       |   ||||       |         |
            chrome-2798  [000] .N.1  6099.188540: mm_shrink_slab_start: super_cache_scan+0x0/0x1b0 ffff8eefa4651830: nid: 0 objects to shrink 5895 gfp_flags GFP_TEMPORARY|__GFP_HIGHMEM pgs_scanned 90 lru_pgs 6992959 cache items 5049 delta 0 total_scan 2524

Since need-resched flag was set as of mm_shrink_slab_start and was not set
as of mm_shrink_slab_end, and last shrinker return val is larger than 0,
PID = 2798 has called cond_resched() inside "while" loop in do_shrink_slab().

During this blank, CPU 0 recorded many mm_vmscan_writepage: lines
with flags=RECLAIM_WB_ANON|RECLAIM_WB_ASYNC. What is strange is that
there was 4.7 seconds of blank inside of 10 seconds of blank.

             <...>-13862 [000] .N.1  6102.008806: mm_vmscan_direct_reclaim_end: nr_reclaimed=42

I wonder what CPU 0 was doing for this blank period.

Nothing interesting was recorded. What is interesting is that nothing
about PID = 6542 was recorded in the trace logs. It stalled for more
than 10 seconds without ever hitting vmscan tracepoints!?

  [ 8445.912332] CFileWriterThre: page allocation stalls for 12123ms, order:4, mode:0x140c4c0(GFP_KERNEL|__GFP_RETRY_MAYFAIL|__GFP_COMP|__GFP_ZERO), nodemask=(null)

I can't tell whether enabling more tracepoints gives us some clue. But
your system might be merely overloaded. Your system is hosting a lot of
processes including QEMU and Chrome on 8 CPUs + 32GB RAM + 64GB swap and
nearly a half of swap is in use, isn't it?

Anyway, this allocation stall warning mechanism is about to be removed
( http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1509017339-4802-1-git-send-email-penguin-kernel@I-love.SAKURA.ne.jp ).

yes, that is the case. Thanks for looking into this Tetsuo.

Yeah, the direct reclaim has started
chrome-2798  [000] ...1  6099.187991: mm_vmscan_direct_reclaim_begin: order=0 may_writepage=1 gfp_flags=GFP_TEMPORARY|__GFP_HIGHMEM classzone_idx=2
and finished
chrome-2798  [000] ...1  6109.509445: mm_vmscan_direct_reclaim_end: nr_reclaimed=51

the only notable hole in logging was the one pointed by Tetsuo. There is
a lot of activity on that CPU during that time wrt. reclaim
$ grep -v '\-2798' trace.txt | grep '\[000\]' | awk '{val=$4+0; if (val > 6099 && val < 6109) print}' | wc -l
744

And there were more processes involved
$ grep -v '\-2798' trace.txt | grep '\[000\]' | awk '{val=$4+0; if (val > 6099 && val < 6109) print $1}' | sort | uniq -c
     74 <...>-10654
     43 <...>-13862
     82 <...>-17624
      2 <...>-27318
      1 <...>-3518
     37 <...>-5331
    180 <...>-6602
     38 chrome-3482
     40 Chrome_IOThread-2773
      3 DedicatedWorker-19604
      1 gmain-10668
    139 qemu-system-x86-13763
    104 TaskSchedulerBa-6011

So I agree that it looks like your system seems to be overloaded.

That being said, though, it makes sense to double check whether we
cond_resched sufficiently because being stuck for 10s while a handful
number of processes is reclaiming sounds still too much. Maybe there is
more than just the reclaim going on. This would require a deeper
inspection of the trace data and maybe even gather other tracepoints.
I am sorry but I cannot promis I will find time to look at this anytime
soon.

Ok, system may be merely overloaded, but in this case expected that
user experience should not getting worse. Switching between tasks
(showing activities in gnome shell) should be such fast as after
reboot in ideal. I am understand that is not easy and depends at many
factors. But I notice that every new Linux release working better also
at overloaded case. And it's very nice. So if five year ago using swap
was impossible because system was becoming fully unresponsible. At
now I see freezes not not exceeding 10 seconds. I hopes thats working
on this warning messages can make Linux better.

Yes, right.

It means this warning was useless?

Don't hesitate trouble me in further. I am wonder to know what else
tracepoint needed enable for deeper debugging.
