Hi,

I have been trying to get GCC bootstrap to pass on CI20 board, but it
seems to always crash. Today, I finally got around connecting the serial
console to see why, and it logged the below BUG.

I wonder if this is an actual bug, or is the hardware faulty?

FWIW, this is 32-bit board with 1 GB RAM. The rootfs is on MMC, as well
as 2 GB + 2 GB swap files.

Kernel config is at the end of the mail.

When a page is freed, it's not supposed to be mapped to userspace
any more, so mapcount should be 0. In your case, it's either -64768,
which is a massive underflow, or it's 0xffff02ff which is a nonsensical
combination of flags. Or a user is putting their own information into
that field (as, eg, slab does). Or it's become corrupted for some reason
unknown to me.

Given this stack trace, the page was mapped into userspace, so something's
gone terribly wrong. My money is on corruption; I haven't seen anyone
report anything like this before.

I'd bet on memory corruption, though not necessarily faulty hardware.

Unfortunately memory corruption on Ci20 boards isn't uncommon... Someone
did make some tweaks to memory timings configured in the DDR controller
which improved things for them a while ago:

  https://github.com/MIPS/CI20_u-boot/pull/18

Would you be up for testing with those tweaks? I'd be happy to help with
updating U-Boot if needed.

Do you know which board revision you have? (Is it square or a funny
shape, green or purple, and does it have a revision number printed on
the silkscreen?)

Thanks,
    Paul

Thanks, I wasn't aware of this, and seems like it could help.

I guess instructions here <https://elinux.org/CI20_Dev_Zone> are valid,
i.e. I can use MMC/SD card to re-flash the U-boot without the risk of
bricking the board, if I understood correctly?

BTW, would it be possible to re-adjust these timings from the kernel side?

It's a purple one. Based on quick look all printings are identical to this
one:

Yes that's correct. It's difficult to impossible to totally brick the
board, given the ability to boot from SD or USB & rewrite the NAND.

One option would be to just build the new U-Boot for SD boot, and leave
your NAND U-Boot entirely untouched until/unless you're satisfied that
the changes help.

> BTW, would it be possible to re-adjust these timings from the kernel side?

Maybe, I'm really not sure. So long as it can be done without destroying
any of the RAM content it would be OK, but I don't know if that's the
case.

OK good to know - so it's a revision B board, which changed from Hynix
to Samsung DDR:

  https://elinux.org/CI20_Hardware#Board_Revisions_and_changes

That's also the revision Gabriele who submitted the U-Boot pull request
linked above has.

Thanks,
    Paul

I did some testing with CI20_u-boot ef995a1611f0, plus the timing fix
cherry picked. Didn't help, I still get random crashes (every time
different).

When checking the serial console with the original U-boot on NAND,
it prints:

	U-Boot SPL 2013.10-rc3-gb2e1fea (Dec 24 2014 - 10:24:52)
	SDRAM H5TQ2G83CFR initialization... done

That would suggest Hynix memory? But when checking the small print on
the chips, they clearly say K4B2G0846Q. The new U-Boot prints (for some
reason SPL printouts are missing):

	U-Boot 2013.10-rc3-g54c6a4817 (May 25 2019 - 14:37:07)

	Board: ci20 (r1) (Ingenic XBurst JZ4780 SoC)

So looks like both old and new U-boot are misdetecting the board as r1
board, and then probably using the wrong timings?

I have now ran memtester with 900M allocation for 10 hours (around 10
loops), then with two processes using 450M allocation each for 24 hours
(some 20 loops or so), and no errors or other issues are encountered.
I would guess if the timings were wrong, memtester would have failed
by now?

When trying GCC bootstrap the systems fails reliably... Usually within
few hours, but sometimes even within 30 minutes.

Maybe the issue is not memory/hardware. Since I build, and have also
swap, on MMC/SDcard perhaps we have some buggy code in the MMC or DMA
driver that results in memory corruption?

A.
