The UP board <http://www.upboard.com> is the computer board for
Professional Makers and Industrial Applications. We want to upstream
the UP board 40-pin GP-bus Kernel driver for giving the users better
experience on the software release. (not just download from UP board
github)

These patches are generated from the Linux kernel mainline tag v6.0.

Change history

(1) PATCH V3 1 (mfd: Add support for UP board CPLD/FPGA)
Fixed kernel test robot compiler warning.

(2) PATCH V3 2 (pinctrl: Add support pin control for UP board CPLD/FPGA)
PATCH V3 3 (leds : Add support for UP board CPLD onboard LEDS)
There is no change.

old :
(1) PATCH V2 1 (mfd: Add support for UP board CPLD/FPGA)
Refer 2022/10/31 Lee Jones review, fixed some of the issues.

(2) PATCH V2 2 (pinctrl: Add support pin control for UP board CPLD/FPGA)
Refer 2022/10/19 Mark Brown and Andy Shevchenko review, fixed some of
the issues.

(3) PATCH V2 3 (leds : Add support for UP board CPLD onboard LEDS)
We did git send-email this patch to maintainer on 2022/10/11 for reviewing.
there's no change on this LED PATCH V2.

The UP Squared board <http://www.upboard.com> implements certain
features (pin control, onboard LEDs or CEC) through an on-board CPLD/FPGA.

This mfd driver implements the line protocol to read and write registers
from the FPGA through regmap. The register address map is also included.

The UP Boards provide a few I/O pin headers (for both GPIO and
functions), including a 40-pin Raspberry Pi compatible header.

This patch implements support for the FPGA-based pin controller that
manages direction and enable state for those header pins.

Partial support UP boards:
* UP core + CREX
* UP core + CRST02

PATCH V3:
(1) fixed kernel test robot compiler warning

PATCH V2:
(1) Synchronizing upboard github to rc2
(2) Refer 2022/10/31 Lee Jones review, fixed some of the issues.

The UP Squared board <http://www.upboard.com> implements certain
features (pin control) through an on-board FPGA.

PATCH V3:
There's no change.

PATCH V2:
(1) Synchronized with upboard github to rc2

(2) Refer 2022/10/19 Mark Brown and Andy Shevchenko review, we removed
the regmap and acpi patches and implement in upboard pinctrl driver.

(3) Refer 2022/10/19 Andy Shevchenko review, fixed the coding style
issues, removed using gpio_xxxx API and removed including <linux/gpio.h>.

The UP boards come with a few FPGA-controlled onboard LEDs:
* UP Board: yellow, green, red
* UP Squared: blue, yellow, green, red

this patch depends on patch "mfd: Add support for UP board CPLD/FPGA"

This is Andy territory as it is x86 and ACPI but...

This "patches" terminology is quite confusing for kernel developers.
Writing some sequence of numbers into some registers at init is called
a "jam table" a term from Bunnie Huang (in his book "Hacking the Xbox" IIRC)

Don't leave this kind of commented out debug code around
in upstream submissions. Delete or use dev_dbg(), actually
dev_dbg() is pretty easy to use, just put an extra flag -DDEBUG
into your Makefile and the debug prints come out.

> +               //of_pinctrl_get(gc->parent->of_node);

What is this even? A commented out call to an OF function in an ACPI driver?

So this looks like it should be uncommented and used or deleted?
It just looks unfinished, and this patch is not an RFC.

This isn't helpful, also there are existing debugfs hooks to be used
for exactly this kind of stuff.

The driver looks a bit unfinished.

It seems they forgot paying the respect to the reviewers by Cc'ing them.

I'm wondering why it has v3 and not RFC in the Subject. So, no need to spend
time right now in reviewing this.

There are 1000's of different types of platform drivers in the kernel.

Just use MFD_CELL_BASIC in-place for now.

Tab all of these values out please. It hurts my OCD.

No, that's not what this means.

Please use the defines already provided for you.

Then just use upboard_up_fpga_data where needed.

Can you show the logic to convert one to the other?

Doesn't look like it. These functions are used for the ^2 version too.

No C++ comments please.

Can you make that comment clearer, I don't understand.

So there is an error, but you're returning okay?

You'd be better off getting rid of 'truct upboard_fpga_data'
altogether.

This should be on one line.

Isn't it this line that sends the pulse?

Does GPIOD really send spurious pulses?

I'd half expect this kind of thing to be in drivers/fpga.

Was that considered?

Should this all live in drivers/led?

Please don't push MFD configuration data through the ACPI API.

I'm going to stop here.

Has this been through any internal review at all?

Please fix your mailer so that these headers do not end up in the

Please fix your mailer to quote the message you're replying to.

Then you can omit the "Larry ..." tags.

You don't have to reply to comments if you agree with them.

Just use '0' in-place.

You shouldn't mix platform initialisation strategies. Doing so gets
messy real quick. So no passing MFD data through ACPI or DT
match-data please. Pass device IDs though, then match on those
instead.

MFD doesn't know (or want to know) about LEDs.

Please place all LED initialisation inside the LED driver.
