VIA IDE performance under 2.6.0-test7/8?

Hi guys;

Am having trouble getting decent IDE performance from the 2.6.0-test8 kernel
(tested with 2.6.0-test7 kernel also, same issue).  The platform is VIA
EPIA-ME6000 - with a VIA VT8235 southbridge.  Under 2.4.21 I get around
40Mb/s in hdparm -t and 70Mb/s for hdparm -T.  Under the 2.6.0-test7/8 I
only manage 13Mb/s & 52Mb/s respectively!  I've attached my .config, and the
output of /proc/ide/via, dmesg, and hdparm info.  I don't think I'm doing
anything particularly stupid here, but if I am, hit me with a wet fish
please :)

Does 'hdparm -a 512 /dev/hd?' help?

Can you also send the output from "cat /proc/interrupts".
It looks like you are not using IO-APIC, but instead using XT-PIC.
XT-PIC is a lot slower than IO-APIC.

Just turn on SMB support in the "make menuconf", and it should enable 
IO-APIC.

If you cannot boot using IO-APIC, you probably have one of the bad VIA 
motherboards. I have not determined if the IO-APIC issues with VIA 
VT8235 MBs is hardware or software related. All I know, is some VIA 
VT8235 MBs work, and some don't. I am still investigating why.

Reading the  previous messages I compared the SuSE 2.4.20-4GB and the 
2.6.0-test8-bk1 kernel.

The mainboard is a VIA EPIA 5000 (cpu Via Eden 533 Mhz, Via 8601A 
Northbridge, VT8231 Southbridge)

hdparm -I /dev/hd? displays no difference ... udma2 is the used mode.

hdparm -T /dev/hd? measures transfer rates of 60-63 MB/s, there is no 
significant difference between
the kernel versions.

hdparm -t /dev/hd? mesasures 18 MB/s for kernel 2.6.0-test8-bk1 and 27 
MB/s for kernel 2.4.20.
This is a significant  :-(

2.4.20 gives almost exactly 50% better performance compared to 
2.6.0-test8 ... is this pure accident or could this give a hint?

Compiling the kernel with and without smb support as well as trying the 
other APIC related new configuration options
does change nothing.  There is allways a "No local APIC present or 
hardware disabled" message. I believe that there
really is no IO-APIC, at least I found no related BIOS configuration option.

/proc/interrupts indicates an XT-PIC for both kernel versions.

IRQ setup is identical, IDE IRQs are not shared with any other devices.

The drive is the only drive attached.

Playing around with different read-ahead values does not help.

Any ideas?

Problem solved ...

I wrote that playing around with read ahead settings (hdparm -a ...) did 
not help.
In fact I was wrong, I assumed that these had identical meaning in the 
2.4 and
2.6 kernel series and tried nothing higher than 255 (2.4.x maximum). 
With 255
kernel 2.4.0 performed 50% better than 2.6.0.

After hdparm -a 8192 /dev/hd?: 2.6.0 performs 10% better than 2.4.0

Shouln´t the default settings be corrected?

As I thought, on these VIA EPIA-M boards there is no IO-APIC, so enabling
the option in the kernel config makes no difference.  Cheers for the idea

I am indeed using the XT-PIC, but I was using it under 2.4.21 also, so I
doubt that is the cause of the problems, especially seeing as bartlomiej's
suggestion of increasing the read-ahead caching worked a treat.  

* Does anyone know why the values of the read-ahead caching are so different
between 2.4.x and 2.6.0-test7/8?  It seems to me that there are two
problems;
A) the meaning of the readahead value has changed (almost guaranteed, as in
2.4.21 I can't set anything above 255)
B) the default of 256 is low, as the default in 2.4 of 8 gave me 40Mb/sec
and the default of 256 in 2.6 gives me only 13Mb/s!

I couldn't see any reference to this change of behaviour anywhere on the
kernel mailing list archives.

I'll give it a go just in case, however I don't like building kernels with
SMP when I have no need for it.

Indeed it does, and -a 1024 is even better, but why the change?  Under
2.4.21, I only have a readahead value of 8 set, in fact hdparm barfs if you
try to set anything above 255!

Any ideas?
