Hello,
I've got Discworld II game, which is safedisc protected and maybe for that
reason not recognised by udev (udevmonitor doesn't display any info when one
of those cd's is inserted). Manual mount works fine though, but it's not a
sollution for me. I need the cd's to be automounted, cause I have to switch
cd's during gameplay, and it's impossible with the mount command.

Wrong list. Udev never mounts CDs, this is the task of gnome-volume-manager,
its KDE equivalent, or ivman (that rely on HAL to get the correct
information for mounting).

Yes, I know that. But when I insert any data cd I get info in udevmonitor
simmilar to:
UEVENT[1170612782.483192] mount@/block/hda
UDEV  [1170612782.491127] mount@/block/hda
and when I insert Discworld II cds I get no info. So I thought this is the
reason for not geting those cds automounted by HAL.

I'll go bothering the HAL dev team then, just dispel my doubts and confirm
that it's definitely not udev's fault.

Those are mount events (not add or remove). They show up in response to
a mount, not to cause one. (Just like add and remove events appear in
response to hardware or modules or whatever being added or removed.)

As already pointed out, udev doesn't care about optical drives,
because they need to be polled to get notifications about a media
change. Anyway, HAL depends on detecting a filesystem prior to a
possible mount. This is provided by libvolume_id. What does:
  /lib/udev/vol_id --export /dev/XXX
print?

It doesn't print anything. It's the same for automountable cd.

Huh, it doesn't even print an error?
You replaced the XXX with your device name? :)

I was suprised too. For one moment I thought something's wrong with the
vol_id, but when I execute the above command with no cd in drive I get
/dev/hdb: error open volume
which is ok I suppose. And no matter what cd is in (the problematic or a
regular one) I get no info from vol_id. I don't know if that's normal. I even
tried -t -l -u switches, but without result.

> You replaced the XXX with your device name? :)

Of course I did :). If I didn't I would end up with an error anyway.

I suppose you ment:
dd if=/dev/hda bs=1 skip2768 count@96 | hexdump -C
In that case it prints:

Hmm, don't know why this isn't recognized. What udev version and what
distro is it?

Care to do:
  strace -o vol_id.trace -t -s100000 /lib/udev/vol_id --export /dev/hda

and send me the created "vol_id.trace" file by private email, because
it is pretty large.

Thanks,
Kay

The trace contains:
  20:39:50 close(4) = 0
  20:39:50 setgroups32(0, []) = -1 EPERM (Operation not permitted)
  20:39:50 close(3) = 0
  20:39:50 exit_group(3)

where setgroups() fails. Are you running the command as root?
