  To: linux-ide

  I installed a SiL3114-based PCI card (Syba) and Western Digital
WD2500SD in my system recently and haven't been able to get the system
to write/read any data from the drive beyond the initial drive probe. I
get a lot of messages about "ATA: abnormal status 0xD8 on port
0xF081C0C7" and SCSI parity errors. This seems to be a problem that
affected people quite a while ago, and I'm not sure why it's appearing
with a recent kernel (2.6.12.5). I've attached the output from dmesg.
Any ideas on what's happening?

Larry

  Are you positive that it's not a hardware problem? Can you please try
the followings?

  * another port
  * another cable
  * try to use them in Windows :-(

  It seems that there are considerable number of crappy cables and
controllers out in the wild these days, and, combined with currently
not-so-robust error recovery of libata, they tend to result in unusable
state.

	Hi Tejun,

  Thanks for the reply. I've tried different PCI slots, different
ports, different cables, and lastly, win98 DOS. DOS is able to
partition and format the drive without a problem, and I copied files
over, etc. without any errors. Are there any diagnostics or tests I can
run to get a better idea of what's going on?

Larry

 Hello, Larry.

 The following thread deals with similar problem.

 The diagnostic/conclusion being...

  Thanks, I had seen that earlier and was really hoping it wasn't just a
bad card :-) It and the drive are brand-new. As an aside, it looks
like the drive may get confused shortly after the initial probe.
Unloading and reloading the driver causes this:

libata version 1.11 loaded.
sata_sil version 0.9
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:0c.0[A] -> Link [LNKA] -> GSI 11 (level,
low) -> IRQ 11

ata_device_add: probe begin
ata_device_add: ata1: probe begin
ata1 is slow to respond, please be patient
ata1 failed to respond (30 secs)
ata_device_add: ata1: probe end

  It never responds after the initial load of the module. I wish I had
a different brand of drive to try and see if that's part of the problem.
Is anybody else using a WD drive?
