You should add some printk()s to debug it. First, verify that it is
recognizing your device and the USB id matches right. Then, try changing
the usbmix_name_map table around. For example create 10 entries and label
them "Master 1-10", etc.

Good idea, the usb ids matched but the indexes in the map don't correspond
to those in asound.state (but I believe they correspond to the bUnitID as
output by lsusb -v ?) my patch ended up:

Unfortunately mythtv still doesn't like it as it's a mono mixer and it
expects stereo :/. looks like I need to write an external volume control
script... which means I don't need the patch.
I have, however, learnt something :)

unloading the snd-usb-audio module by hand, I did a reboot though and its
still the same. I'll post to the devel list tomorrow, thanks for your

Did you reboot? Make sure the new driver is loaded?

It's mythtv that's the problem and as it's going to be attached to my myth
box it's fairly critical to me that volume control works... but I agree
that mythtv should have better configuration to allow it.
But anyway I applied this patch:

That should work. But can't you just configure your apps to use that
control as master? It's a bug for an app to assume that there's a control
called "Master" and fail if it does not exist.

Thanks changing to "plughw:1,0" allowed me to change the channels around.
"hw:1,0" doesn't work for some reason.
Would I be right that adding an entry in usbmixer_maps.c would allow me to
rename 'Speaker 1' to 'Master' by using the control numbers in
/etc/asound.state -1?

Please say if there is any other useful information I can give which will
allow me to get the outputs to the correct speakers. I've tried swapping
the cables around but then I have RL/RR swapped and centre/LFE swapped.
I could get around it by making some custom cables which swap the outputs,
but it would be better to have the driver either swap them internally or
allow the swapping using asoundrc. Also lack of a functioning PCM and no
Master controls is causing problems with volume control in mythtv and
xine.

I now have it producing 6 channel sound :). It worked on another machine
(also Gentoo), so I changed some kernel configs and I have it working with
the exception of some of the channels being swapped. I'll update tomorrow
as to which. I can't move them using .asoundrc as it complains:

I now have it producing 6 channel sound :). It worked on another machine
(also Gentoo), so I changed some kernel configs and I have it working with
the exception of some of the channels being swapped. I'll update tomorrow
as to which. I can't move them using .asoundrc as it complains:
aplay -D swapchannels Surround-SDL-testfiles/chan-id.wav -c6
