Hi,

on the planning phone meeting for the OpenPrinting Summit yesterday we
decided on giving more time to the Common Printing Dialog as we expect
more discussion there. Therefore we will talk about color management
only up to lunch and directly after lunch we will talk about printing
from applications for 45 minutes. The rest of the day will be dedicated
to the Common Printing Dialog. See

Please upload and link your slides.

Did they require from the session to last a certain minimum of hours? We
still have the session, it is only a little bit shorter. The intentions
of the sessions do not change and Michael Vrhel's presentation will
still be done.

ah, cool. thanks.

we did a first round of usability testing today. there were
some interesting and encouraging results.

we will do another round on saturday, with an updated dialog
design and looking at some other aspects.

Color management and printing are still in the very early stages at this point
and I am not sure that having a longer session would buy very much since this
is not far enough along to dig into it in a detailed way. Even if it were
that far along we would need much more time than was originally scheduled to
work at that level of detail.

From my point of view I was mostly interested in establishing some basic
agreements on the CM printing architecture and who the players would be in
each area so that we would know who our contacts were as this moved forward.
In addition, some of the CPD time will be spent talking about how color
management will be exposed to users in the CPD. At least that was what we
talked about at the last planning meeting. So this effectively makes the CPD
session a color management session as well although this will likely only be
one part of that session.

One other thing related to this. I have listened in to most of the planning
meetings and also kept abreast of the activity on this list and as is always
the case when CM is first being considered for a new area or application there
is a significant amount confusion about what exactly CM is and how it should
work. This is mostly because adding CM to an existing system is not a trivial
undertaking and those who work on the system, unless they already have a CM
background, have a significant learning curve to get past to get to the point
where they have a basic understanding of how it fits into their system. One
of my concerns about the CM sessions at the Summit is that we could get bogged
down in confusion among participants who have not gotten far enough up that
learning curve to understand how it should/could all fit together. If this
turns out to be a significant issue at the Summit then a longer session will
not help move things forward.

What about reserving one breakout for color management already?

Count in also the desktop printing sessions on Thursday afternoon. There
we will also talk about color management in desktop apps and printing
dialog.

Thank you for uploading the slides. This is a nice introduction into the
subject, so it fits well to be the first part of the session.

I have sent personal e-mails to all participants of the LF Summit who
had at least one of the words "desktop", "GTK", "Qt", "GNOME", or "KDE"
in their registrations inviting them to the Thursday afternoon sessions
of the OpenPrinting Summit.

George, thank you for advising me.

All, the desktop-related meetings of the Linux Foundation Summit have
moved from Thursday morning to Thursday afternoon.

Better than asking the desktop people for a small slot to summarize our
results is perhaps swapping the Thursday morning and the Thursday
afternoon in our OpenPrinting Summit schedules, so that the desktop
experts have free to participate in our meetings about the Common
Printing Dialog. We could start the Thursday with the dialog, let the
application printing follow and do the color management in the afternoon.

WDYT? Should we do so?

Hi Till,

Reversing the whole Thursday schedule (swapping morning and
afternoon topics) seems like a major change that is likely to lose
some Open Printing participation (by phone) on both topics.

I suggest we leave the major topics schedule alone.

Perhaps we could ask the Desktop Architects people to join us in
a dedicated teleconference on Common Print Dialog sometime in
the near future?

Cheers,
- Ira

Hi,

I have asked the participants of the OpenPrinting Summit to upload their
slides as Wiki attachments. See instructions at the beginning of the
"Agenda" section of

http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/OpenPrinting_Summit_San_Francisco_2009

Unfortunately, the server seems to have lost connection to the
attachments. See what you get when clicking on a link to an attachment:

http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/Images/7/78/CUPS-2008-04-08.pdf

Can you URGENTLY fix this, as our call-in participants will not be able
to access the slides. Thank you very much in advance.

    Till
